THE FOUNDER OF THE SOUND START FOUNDATION: KEVIN DUFFY

The Sound Start Foundation is the non-profit arm of Sound United, maker of some of the most prestigious and admired brands of consumer audio electronics in the world. The Foundation donated over 10,000 musical instruments last year to underserved communities and children in need.

Founded four years ago by Sound United CEO Kevin Duffy, the Foundation's creation and purpose was profoundly influenced by his own personal life experience.

"My grandpa gave me a trumpet when I was 6 years old and insisted I call him every night to practice. The majors and minors pumped in his veins over that telephone line as I played, and we held this routine well into my teens."

As is so often the case, the lessons learned from playing a musical instrument went far beyond the music itself:

"In high school, I also developed a passion for football and applied that same sense of discipline I found through music to athletics. Though I never had the talent to make it as a musician or play professional sports, music, and football ingrained in me the value of discipline, the need for practice to master a craft, and how a team of creative and talented people when in sync can create something magical though playing their part."

As the Foundation's Chairman of the Board, Kevin remains close to the organization and its activities.

"Right now too many kids don’t have access to musical instruments at school. With your help, we can begin to bridge this educational gap and give every kid the opportunity they deserve."

- Kevin Duffy, Chairman of the Board at Sound Start

Join the worldwide Make Music Day celebration of music on June 21!

Make Music is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries.

Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public.

5. In the past, secondary students who participated in a music group at school reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (to***co, alcohol, and illicit drugs).

6. Schools with music programs have an estimated 90.2% graduation rate and 93.9% attendance rate compared to schools without music education, which average 72.9% graduation and 84.9% attendance.

Although the extraordinarily positive relationship of music and the human brain has been recognized for at least 2,500 years, it is only in the past 30 years that science has proven it beyond any doubt. This is one of literally thousands of examples of compelling scientific research to that end. We will regularly share more of this evidence on the Sound Start Foundation page, in our quarterly newsletter and in other media channels.

HOW THE ADULT BRAIN IS SHAPED BY MUSICAL TRAINING IN CHILDHOOD

"Our results suggest that neural changes accompanying musical training during childhood are retained in adulthood."

The Sound Start Foundation is so fortunate to be the nonprofit arm of Sound United, one of the leading global consumer audio technology companies in the world.

In 2020-21, the most recent academic year, the Foundation surpassed our first year goal, donating 10,056 instruments to 57 schools in 21 school districts.

This is only the beginning and we are aiming much higher this year and beyond. In the wake of the pandemic and declining school budgets, the need is greater than ever.

While the Foundation depends heavily on outside donors to fund what we do, donations start with our own founding company. The company currently donates 5% of its sales revenues from three of its premium brands to the Foundation: Denon®, Polk Audio® and Definitive Technology® directly to the Sound Start Foundation.
