Helping Others with Diabetes Through Andy

Helping Others with Diabetes Through Andy Many people do not realize what a life-threatening disease diabetes is or how managing the disease can take both a physical and financial toll on a person.

The purpose of the Andy Towne Memorial Endowment (ATME) is to support diabetes education, services and supplies to treat and prevent diabetes, and related health concerns, in our region. The cost of diabetic supplies often prevents many diabetics from appropriately managing their diabetes, which can lead to debilitating side effects. Money from the endowment will be used to purchase blood glucose

testing supplies, medications, and other necessities. In the future our goal is to be able to offer the services of diabetic educators and dietitians to provide valuable information needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This year we are able sponsor two local kids by sending them to diabetic camp. Diabetes camps often have all the usual camp activities such as swimming, boating, archery, arts and crafts, and hiking. In addition the camps provide an education that helps kids learn how to manage their disease. For example, they may learn how to adjust their diet or insulin when exercising/playing a sport, or they may learn how to give themselves their own shots for the first time. Dr. Barbara Anderson, a senior psychologist at the Diabetes Care Center at Texas Children’s Hospital, says, “The primary benefit of diabetes camp is the connection among children with diabetes and other children and counselors who have diabetes. Camp can break down the isolation kids often feel." (http://www.diabetes.org)

Due to the community's support over the years, The Andy Towne Memorial Endowment (ATME) is proud to announce, we are able to sponsor 3 more kids to diabetic camp this summer. ATME has sponsored two partial and one full scholarships for a total of $3,000. Two of the campers will attend Harrisburg Diabetic Youth Camp (HDYC) which serves ages 7-12 and one at Camp Setebaid which serves ages 13-18.

Andy benefited from attending diabetic camp over the summer when he was young, so we are honored to be able to give back to the community and help other diabetic youths have the opportunity to attend camp, learn more about taking care/managing their diabetes, while being around their peers and experiencing all the fun summer camps offer.

Andy Towne Memorial Endowment Fund is proud to sponsor another child to the Setebaid summer camp.

Fun fact... Setebaid is diabetes spelled backwards.

Setebaid is a not-for-profit organization providing diabetes education and support summer camp programs for children and teens with diabetes.

Our primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for youth living with diabetes and their families, and provide them with enjoyable summer camp experiences which are shared with their peers.

Campers will gain independence and knowledge of managing their diabetes, comradery from other diabetic campers, while enjoying outdoor summer camp activities (like arts & crafts, archery, swimming, etc).

Thank you for all your support over the years. We are honored to use Andy's fund to help send children to this camp. Andy attended when he was young and absolutely loved the camp!

The American Diabetes Association released new research on March 22, 2018 estimating the total costs of diagnosed diabetes have risen to $327 billion in 2017 from $245 billion in 2012, when the cost was last examined.

With your help the ATME hopes to help relieve some of the burden and strain diabetes puts on families in our community.
