BERI is a non-profit organization in Nicholas County, KY, dedicated to the rescue and care of injured, abandoned, neglected, and other at-risk horses.

To donate: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/7bca3b29-3ea4-4d9d-83d3-f5044a9ec8c5 We are in the beginning stages of organizing the Buckland Wounded Warrior Retreat, here at The Buckland. Initially primitive camping and 'horsing around' will provide a venue for a retreat and reflection for our fine men and women who defend and have defended our country with their lives. We cannot thank them enough! As we develop the site, we hope to attract professional counselors, host group and private sessions and yes, Equine Assisted Therapy through the EAGALA model.

It is with a heavy heart that we here at BERI announce the sudden passing of our oldest resident.

Misty Avalon passed peacefully and suddenly early this am.
The vets had estimated her age to be somewhere around 45 years old.

She was a favorite with friends and family and her preferred hangout was actually the front yard.

Today and tomorrow, I will be preparing her grave and burying her. She will be greatly missed.

Ironically this song played today and it fit Misty's passage over the Rainbow Bridge...

Good Night from The Buckland.
19 years ago today...
The mighty JR arrived at The Buckland.....and Buckland Equine Rescue was born.
A descendent of the legendary Hyperion, JR maintained his muscle long after retiring from long distance brush jumping. 4 miles, 40 jumps.
Four years later on an October night, JR came down the hill and crossed this bridge...having been restless and listless all day, he was affectionate and clingy at evening feed. I didn't know he was saying goodbye.
A few hours later, under a full moon on a cool autumn night...JR had a massive stroke and passed in that field just across the driveway.
His volunteer caretaker, Miss Rose screamed for an hour when she arrived that morning. His thoroughbred companion, A.U. Sweetheart, mourned for days at his grave.
Every October, I play 'Ramble On' by Led Zeppelin and have a Scotch in his honor.
He will never be forgotten.

We are the longest continuing all breed rescue in Kentucky!

In 2013, we were recognized as Rescue of the Year by A.I.M. media during the Rolex 3-day!

Look for the celebration of all things horse...and music...

For a whole year, starting in July!

So...
We got scammed.
It cost the Rescue $1450.

Basically I went on FB marketplace and searched out quality horse hay. I found an ad that has been up for a while and made a query.
We struck a deal and I paid for the hay and delivery. This was yesterday with delivery due today around 2pm. The load allegedly was coming from Letchfield, KY, about 3 hours away.

This am I had a message...
At 10:57, the seller required me to send another $1099 to 'insure the load'.
I canceled the deal and requested a refund. This was never mentioned until it was delivery time. They refused to refund and then stopped replying.

The bank is on it because we used the M/C card for the payment. I did this specifically. However PayPal is dodgy these days and will take over a month to reply. There isn't even a 'dispute' screen visible on PayPal these days. I don't have much faith in the process.

So we're short. I have the hay covered as far as supply and affordability.

In the next few days, I'll post a fundraiser for the Rescue. We need $1500, which will feed from 2 weeks to a month.

Sigh. People out there suck.

When dinosaurs ruled the earth...

Did you know that Equus Caballus has 64 chromosomes?

Humans have only 46.

Science has no idea what some of the chromosomes do in the horse. No all of them are 'turned on' presently in their evolutionary trail.
There is speculation that one of them would allow them to migrate using the earth's magnetic field. Another one is suspected of giving them more acute sensory 'feelers'. When attentive, a horse can sense emotion or change in surroundings even not in a direct line of sight. Horse owners who spend a great deal of time with their horses understand this well.

Moving into her late 30s, Misty Avalon enjoys a cooler summer evening...

When dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Contrary to popular belief...
Equus Caballus originated in North America about 3,700,000 years ago, and migrated to Eurasia about 2,000,000 years ago. Their disappearance from NA until reintroduced by Europeans is still a mystery.

Harvest Dance enjoys his retirement here at The Buckland...
