Color Carlisle

Color Carlisle Carlisle, PA is a thriving community that is also home to an affluent liberal arts college, world renowned youth ballet program, and Army War college.

We are striving to generate an ongoing proactive approach to maintaining a positive and connected community that focuses on healthy, sustainable, and safe living spaces that celebrate the diversity in our population, both racially and socioeconomically. The diversity of people’s cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds makes our community unique, but also presents numerous challenges. To help unify

the vast difference in socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, we as ministry leaders, community members and educators seek to strengthen Carlisle, and its residents, by providing an ongoing initiative that ties students, children, families, and individuals together to support the development, creation, and upkeep of public art. Our goal, through a community art initiative, is to create sustainable living spaces by updating spaces with public art. We can create spaces that are welcoming while also improving upon neglected property. Through the creation of public art, we can further enhance the community’s presence while also enhancing an individual’s personal health and positive mindset about their community.

It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us. We’ve been busy planning for projects in 2020 and then boom - we got hit with the news we all are experiencing. So we found an awesome project that EVERYONE can participate in while they are quarantined and practicing social distancing. Join my boys and spread happy in the world with the . Decorate the window of your home with a painted picture of a rainbow. And while taking a social distance walk through town for some daily exercise, be on the lookout and snap a selfie when you spot one and tag us in your photo using the hashtag .

I grew up down the road in Camp Hill and went to Colorado to attend college – then transferred to Dickinson when I needed to be closer to home – thinking that I would not really like it here but that my family needed me. Then, as the years went by (54 of them now!), I’ve become more and more fond of Carlisle and would do it all over again if the occasion arose!⠀

After finishing college I taught at what was then the Cumberland County Division of Special Services – later the Capital Area Intermediate Unit. After years of teaching students with various needs (my favorite were the teen aged kids with behavioral “issues” – wonderful kids!) I became a Behavioral Support Consultant for the Intermediate Unit. ⠀
Since retiring from that career I’ve been active with the Carlisle Area Dog Parks Association. Our association created and now maintains and improves the park (which is located in Shaffer Park) for Carlisle area dogs and their owners to have a safe and secure place to socialize, exercise and play. ⠀

There is very much that is good about this community – and the fact that the citizens are always striving to make it better is one of them! It is so heartening to live where there are signs in many yards and windows reminding people that all are welcome here! ⠀

The diversity that we have here does much to strengthen our town and I believe that will continue to enhance our lives here. Given the state of our country today it is clear that we will have to continue to work hard to make this a good place for all people..and I think we are up to it! – Gail Black

In 2011, I began seriously dating a longtime friend who has lived for years in Cumberland County. In an attempt to woo me away from the Philadelphia metro area, he naturally took me first to the “Gem of Carlisle”- the Carlisle Theatre (Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center). I had a blast visiting all the shops, galleries, and restaurants. Ever since, Carlisle is our go-to when I want to impress family and friends visiting from out of town, and they are never disappointed. I like to say that “I chose Cumberland County,” and I’m a fierce advocate for Central PA, and especially for the arts! I’ve been a guest blogger for Americans for the Arts.

After years of working outside of the area since moving here, I’m thrilled to finally serve an organization in my community! I’m the first Executive Director for Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center, also known as the Carlisle Theatre. I’m a partner with our board of directors in service to our mission in offering programming to fulfill the cultural and artistic needs of our region while adding value to our community’s vibrancy and diversity. Film and theatre are in my DNA. Growing up, I was one of the “drama kids.” As a teenager, I learned every aspect of movie theaters from concessions, ticketing to projection as the manager of a dual-screen art house. I bring my corporate management and arts nonprofit management experience to our organization.

Carlisle is alive and kicking. It’s beautiful, walkable, has easy parking and lots of pickings for dining, shopping and entertainment. There are so many examples of our community’s interest in working together for the success of the town, and everyone is pulling in the same direction. The Farmers Market on the Square (Farmers on the Square) is one great example- the vendors offer an incredible variety of goods, and we are thrilled to host the indoor market January through April at the Theatre. We have no shortage of community partners and businesses to work with. We are grateful for this area’s true community spirit and are glad to work with them in service.

The arts have a special role to play in helping to bring people together, raise awareness about community issues and help solve issues creatively. I’m excited for our partnership in “The Invisible Class” film screening on November 20 at the Theatre, to help raise awareness and share local resources during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. For this event, we are supporting Community CARES, Domestic Violence Services, Project SHARE of Carlisle PA, Safe Harbor (Safe Harbour, Inc.), and the Salvation Army. We’re thrilled to help address bullying in schools through the “C.A.T.CH.” program we are supporting in local schools through our talented Artistic Director in December. I’ve seen firsthand how the arts help build job skills in young people and bring people from diverse backgrounds together. Using film as a discussion pivot point, or processing events or feelings in theatre, the arts can be therapeutic personally. Film and theatre represent a shared experience. The arts can transform individuals and places. We provide a literal stage and platform for the best parts of our selves and our community. Some people may not yet understand that we are a regional nonprofit, but we have been well loved and an important community space for many years.

As a new leader for our organization, I am spending a lot of time talking to diverse groups of people and hearing their dreams and visions for the future, and how the Theatre's mission might meet their ideas and plans. I hope that we continue to hear new, often unheard voices. Carlisle already is a cultural commons. Our organization helps draw many new visitors into the life of Carlisle. We help inspire livability of our area, its economic development, and community connectedness. - Erika Juran, Executive Director for Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center

ELECTION DAY UPDATE - CARLISLE 2ND WARD

Public Works crews are in the process of covering up "NO PARKING" signs on E. South Street. Voters are encouraged to park on that side of the street without fear of a citation, AND

UGI has some holes to backfill on E. South Street then will get out there as soon as possible, freeing up more parking for voters.

Hey fans and followers - while many of you may be aware, one of our favorite shops in downtown Carlisle suffered a great loss to their business due to the wicked storm that passed through last night. We are not sure if they found a roofer to help with the damage, but if you are aware of anyone that can help, please reach out to Whistlestop ASAP.

Also, as you begin to prepare for your holiday shopping, consider going out of your way to shop local and support this amazing small business as it works to recover lots of the losses they experienced from the storm. Books makes AWESOME gifts!

It's only happened once before in 34 years. The rain came down so hard and so fast that a major breach opened above the general fiction section. Mulan and I moved as fast as we could. Hundreds of books have been destroyed. Conservative estimate of some thousands of dollars gone. Water and paper do not mix. I have removed all books from the two cases of general fiction in the front room. Tomorrow at noon I leave for a French & Indian war seminar for which I am a principal vendor, so I must attend. Rowan and Betsy will be here with slightly abbreviated hours. You will have slim pickings in general fiction, A-M by authors' last name. Most of the books can be replaced; some cannot. Plus the roof intersections above are shot. I welcome names of tried and true roofers who are able to work quickly and soon. I'm going home to the highlands. I am heartsick of doing triage on my handpicked books. I have been here for 12 hours, and it has been a sad Halloween. Thank you in advance for understanding the challenges in the days ahead.
