Did you know that Gold Star Mother Elise C. Nielson polled the National Executive Board of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. in early 1954 for their approval, in order for her to look at available properties in Washington, D.C. to purchase a Headquarters for AGSM? She found the townhouse on Leroy Place, which was owned by the Episcopal Church. The asking price was $26,500. The Gold Star Mothers negotiated the price down to $25,000. Mrs. Nielson offered to loan the organization the $7,500 down payment and to sign the bank note for the balance. AGSM had been renting a small apartment for the National Office, which cost $150/month and the monthly payment on the new property would be $157/month. On March 20, 1954 the offer was accepted. Two-thirds of the National Board had approved the offer. The entire mortgage was paid off by December 1960. There was a "Burning of the Mortgage" at the 1960 Convention.
