Many of you may remember the tiny kitten we took in just over a week ago after she was found unresponsive with blood coming from her eye and nose. We wanted to share an update on this little family.
First, the good news. ❤️
Our little fighter is looking so much better and seems to be feeling much better too. One of the best pieces of news is that the finder of the kittens was able to safely secure mom, and she has now been reunited with her babies. Seeing them back together has been incredibly rewarding.
Unfortunately, the story isn’t without heartbreak.
When mom arrived, she was battling a severe upper respiratory infection and had little interest in eating. Before long, the kittens began showing signs of illness as well. Thankfully, our friends at Heritage Animal Hospital were able to get mom and babies in quickly, and everyone was started on medications to help them fight the infections and other health challenges they’re facing.
We also elected to have mom triple tested, and she came back positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).
While hearing “FIV positive” can sound frightening, the reality is often very different than people assume. FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, most commonly from unneutered cats fighting. It is not easily spread through sharing food bowls, water dishes, litter boxes, grooming, or simply living together. Many FIV-positive cats live long, happy, healthy lives with proper care.
Sadly, despite everyone’s efforts, one of the babies passed away, the tiniest of the bunch who weighed just shy of 1/2 lb. We suspect that his extremely low body weight combined with infection simply became too much for his tiny body to overcome. Losing these little ones never gets easier, and our hearts ache for him.
This family’s story is a reminder of why we will never stop preaching the importance of spaying, neutering, and vaccinating our pets.
When cat populations grow unchecked, diseases spread more easily. Animals compete for limited food sources, injuries from fighting become common, and mothers are left trying to raise litter after litter while struggling to survive themselves. The result is suffering that is entirely preventable.
Please continue sending healing thoughts, prayers, and positive energy to this sweet mama and her remaining babies. They still have a long road ahead of them, but they’re fighters, and we’re hopeful brighter days are coming. ❤️
As always, thank you to everyone who supports rescues, fosters, donates, vaccinates, and spays/neuters. You truly are part of the solution. Want to help us help more? Check out our website. Sign up to foster, donate, share our posts. It takes a village.🐾
