You can’t love a mustang into domestication.

Hold on, don’t fly off the handle - let’s break this down.

Loving them, caring for them and respecting them are crucial to gentling. They are wired uniquely to a domestic horse. More sensitive, more responsive, and a clean slate. Out of the domestic horses that I have worked with, many come to us with a barrel of baggage (just as we humans do, in most respects).

Making sure that your mustang is properly fed, watered and housed is a necessary love language. You can (and should) spend time with them - sitting, interacting, and building a foundation of trust. All of these things make gentling your mustang more successful.

But you cannot simply love, coddle and adore a mustang and really give them an adequate gift of domestication.

Mustangs are so intelligent - and if you give an inch in regards to a negative behavior, they will commonly take a mile. Horses aren’t malicious - but when you have a horse that has survival etched into their very DNA, they will typically choose that survival over ‘love’ every time.

Give your mustang the gift of domestication. Assure that they can have their feet trimmed, be treated by a vet and (at minimal) haltered. Boundaries are love. Knowledge is love. Let them have the tools to be productive members of society, in the case that they ever experience a need for a new life without you. Preserve your safety. Your 1000 lb mustang is not a puppy (and although I adore mine) - know how to differentiate the two, for their safety and your own.
