This is what we have come up with for a "Trinket Trading" policy.

From our research "Trinket Trading" started at the Ohio Renaissance Fair by their Viking group as a way to engage children in a fun activity it got so big and distracting that it has since been banned except for it's original purpose. So the following is what we are posting as "Trinket Trading" policy for now.

Ever wondered what Trinket Trading is and what policy is in place regarding Trinket Trading at Magic and Mayhem Fantasy Faire? Well, wonder no more!

Trinket Trading is a great way to get to know people at the festival and to make new friends. Creating trinkets is also a creative pre-event activity that many people enjoy.

What is a trinket? A trinket is a small item/token used to trade against similar small items/tokens. It can be handmade, or store bought.

As there are a lot of people new to trinket trading, we have been receiving a lot of questions regarding what is and isn’t allowed at Magic & Mayhem Fantasy Faire as people are concerned of breaking any festival rules while trinket trading. We have combined all the visitor questions and concerns raised by our traders in the below set of rules which are there to guide you in the wonderful world of Trinket Trading.

We ask that anyone participating in the trading of trinkets abide by the following rules:

1. Trinkets may not be sold. You may only give them away or trade them for other trinkets

2. Trinkets should not have monetary value

3. Trinket trading is only allowed as a non-commercial activity and cannot be used for self promotion. Handing out business cards with trinkets or adding information on trinkets such as your Instagram page, webshop address etc is not allowed

4. In consideration of child safety, there must always be an adult present when children are involved in trinket trading

5. Respect our vendors and their efforts. Do not create/trade products that compete with something vendors offer

6. Do not approach/offer to trade a trinket to a person that is browsing a stall or is already engaged in a conversation with someone else. You might inadvertently interrupt a potential sale

7. Only offer to trade with a vendor if they have a marked trinket trading sign. Trades should not be offered for any vendor’s items for sale

8. It is not polite to ask to see the other persons trinket first before deciding if you wish to trade with them. Treat fellow trinket traders with respect

9. Trinkets are not allowed to promote a political, religious or other socially controversial topic/point of view

10. Trinkets should not make a mess (no glitter, confetti etc)

11. Stickers are not allowed to be traded as trinkets

12. Food item trinkets are not allowed (health and safety concern)

13. Trinkets should not be used to tip performers, they have spent countless hours working on their craft and deserve respect and to be rewarded.

If you have read all of this you are ready to trade trinkets with the best of them!

What do you fine people of the realm think of "Trinket Trading"? Is it something that we should encourage at our faires? Magic and Mayhem Fantasy Faire & Central Idaho Renaissance Fair

Trinket trading at Renaissance Faires is a social tradition where attendees exchange small, low-value items, often to celebrate costumes or make new friends. The practice originated as a children's game involving simple exchanges like rocks for jokes but has evolved into a widespread adult hobby, particularly following its resurgence post-2020.

Key Rules and Etiquette

Identification: Traders often wear an orange ribbon or display a specific badge to signal they are open to trading.

Value: Items must have nominal monetary value (typically under $2) and should not be something sold by official vendors, such as high-quality jewelry or mass-produced costume pieces.

Safety and Respect: Trading should never involve edible items or liquids unsafe for children. When trading with minors, parental consent is required, and traders should negotiate with guardians to ensure the item is appropriate.

Location: Trading should occur in quiet, off-the-side areas and never inside vendor booths or during performances to avoid disrupting business or staff.

Common Trinkets Popular items include plastic coins, beads, rocks, crystals, buttons, origami, small resin figures (like ducks or mushrooms), and handcrafted charms. Some faires provide official trading badges or have designated trade boxes, though policies vary significantly by event.

We are going to try something at Magic and Mayhem Fantasy Faire that we have not yet done at our other fairs. We will be having a treasure chest raffle, we will be asking vendors to donate a small item (voluntarily, no pressure whatsoever) to add to the chest, we will also be throwing in a few items. All proceeds from this raffle will go straight to the scholarship fund and not be used anywhere else. What are your thoughts? Like and share♥️
