Jackson - Union County Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God's love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Jackson - Union County Habitat for humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. Families apply to our local Jackson, Union County Habitat for a home. Habitat does not give away free homes. A family that gets a home must be willing to invest 250-300 "sweat equity hours" to build their home and take a money management course. When the home is completed, the family commits to making regular mortgage payments (at zero percent interest) until the mortgage is paid off. All Are Welcome

Jackson - Union County Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

We will continue working on porches and prepping for work on soffits at 1834 Pine Street in Murphysboro on Saturday, October. 17. We will start at 8AM.

This past Wednesday we got the front and back doors in place. I spent a little time in the crawl space prepping for the John A Logan HVAC students who came in the afternoon to do some prep work. They plan to return this coming Wednesday to start installing duct work. Hopefully the weather will not get in their way. It was great to see Susan and she got a lot of the debris swept out of the house. On Saturday Dan concentrated on getting the back porch started. The rest of our small workforce got the tub and shower enclosures in place and rebuilt the walls there. We also nailed down the spacing of the roof rafters. In the last photo, Tim was demonstrating that the door k**b we installed worked properly.

We will be working at 1834 Pine Street on Wednesday, October 7 and on Saturday, October 10. We will start at 8AM both days. We’ll be getting doors installed and work on the porches.

This past week we got decking on the front porch and then attended to some details inside on Saturday. We got things in order so we can move the tub and shower enclosures into place and Dan got the hole cut in the utility closet for the HVAC team from John A Logan. Sadly, our supervisors are being spread thin these days but we’re doing our best and thankfully, they are very patient.

We had a good crew out last Saturday. We got work done on the porch, got the house wrapped and got hurricane tie downs on. Now the roof won’t blow off if big wind comes up!

We will continue working this week on the front porch and a few other things. We have enough people for our Wednesday workday and we have a few things we will be doing on Saturday.

Here’s some photos from the weekend.

We will be working at 1834 Pine Street on Saturday, Sept. 26th starting at 8AM. We are going to start working on the porches as we wait for windows to arrive.

We did a little side job today and got a ramp installed on Clarke Street in Murphysboro. We had purchased this metal ramp a few years ago to use for temporary installments. This was our first time setting it up so we had to do some minor problem solving but it came together very nicely.

¡Muchas Gracias! We are so thankful to Baine Roofing. Ross and this great team got the underlayment and shingles on for us today! We really appreciate the many local businesses who donate their time to help build our community. These guys got a jump on the day, getting rolling just as the sun was coming up. They were completely done and got stuff put away and cleaned up any scraps and debris by 9:15AM. Good thing because it’s only 10:45 now and the temp is already up to 91 degrees! Great family! Great crew!

This is a lot pictures but not near enough to capture the activity of the past week. We are so grateful for the John A Logan Construction classes and their professors, Bart and Wade. They came over last week and got our walls up and then returned Monday and Tuesday to get the roof trusses and decking done. And TaDah! There’s a house! Scroll down for the after and before shot… in a few months, they’ll be looking more similar.

Next up is shingles and our team can work on porches while we wait on windows and doors.

Last Saturday some brave volunteers came out in the sweltering heat to work on backfilling the trench around the house and continuing work on the decking/subfloor. We are super grateful to Craig Carnes who brought his tractor! The trench is filled and the Safety Officer is happy! On Monday a few of us returned to finish out the last bit of the decking.

The John A Logan Construction classes will be there on Wednesday to start putting up the walls they built last spring semester. It’ll be another brutally hot day so they will work as long as it’s safe to do so.

Today we got the remaining floor joists in and got the blocking done and made some progress on the decking. We ran out of glue at about the same time the heat started wilting us.

We’re going to continue on the decking this Saturday, Sept 5th starting at 7:30AM. We also have a young man with a tractor coming over to help do backfill and get rid of the mountain of dirt and make it a lot safer to work around the house. If you can spare some time Saturday morning, it would be greatly appreciated since some of our regulars have previous engagements and can’t be there. If you have them, bring gloves. Be sure to bring water… we will have a big jug for refills. And a hat is helpful as well. It’ll be another hot one!

We will return to 1834 Pine Street on Tuesday, Sept 1. Some of us will be getting there at 7:30AM to try to beat a bit of the heat! We’ll finish the last of the floor joists in the laundry room and get the decking down. Then next Saturday (Sept 5) we will work on back-filling the trenches around the house. John A Logan Construction classes are scheduled to be there Sept 9 and 10th to erect the walls and will return the following week to put the roof on.

It was a hot one yesterday! And we stayed a little later than usual. But we had a goal in mind. We got the box built and floor joists in except for the laundry area. Art got the tree stump cut down so we can drive over it. Susan and Beckie got ideas about siding and shingle colors. And Randy showed off his young knees! My older ones are saying *ouch* just looking at that photo!
