Aspen Valley Land Trust

Aspen Valley Land Trust Protecting and caring for land in the Roaring Fork and middle Colorado River valleys since 1967.

Together, landowners, community partners, and AVLT have protected over 43,000 acres of the places you love. Within these conserved lands are over 100 miles of riverfront and over 30 miles of public hiking and biking trails. Almost anywhere you go in the Roaring Fork or Colorado River valleys, you will come across open landscapes that will remain that way, forever. The loss of open and scenic lands

to unplanned development threatens our economy and quality of life. The conservation of open land helps ensure clean water, habitat and migration corridors for wildlife, a future for local working farms and ranches, and equitable access to outdoor education and recreation. Join with AVLT to create a legacy of conservation for the next generation, and the ones to follow.

We are heartbroken to share the recent passing of JoAnn Coffman. Always a warm presence and a calm but steady force in this community, Jo touched countless lives through her kindness, creativity, and deep connection to the land. We are proud to have worked with Jo throughout the years and to forever steward her legacy through the care of Coffman Ranch.

Please help welcome Alex Wells to the AVLT team! As the new Conservation & Stewardship Manager, Alex will help strengthen AVLT’s capacity to protect and care for land.

Growing up in the Roaring Fork Valley instilled a land ethic in Alex from a young age, which he has carried with him throughout his career. After earning a B.A. in Conservation Biology, Alex spent four years coordinating wildlife-focused citizen science projects in Vermont and Colorado, including the Colorado Pika Project. Wanting to focus more on helping ecosystems and communities adapt to a changing climate, Alex pursued a Master’s of Environmental Management at the Yale School of the Environment, where he deepened his knowledge of western water and ecosystem management.

Even as his work has taken him elsewhere, Alex’s passions and priorities have always remained rooted in the streams and aspen groves of his home valley. If he’s not on the job, Alex is likely playing guitar or bounding up, down, and around mountains, on foot or on skis.

We are thrilled to have his expertise and passion on the team. Welcome, Alex!

Great news for conservation in Colorado!

“The Roaring Fork Valley and beyond have been tremendous beneficiaries of this program over the years. That has helped keep working lands working. It’s helped create new trails and protect existing recreation areas.”

Bipartisan legislation to extend the state’s Conservation Easement Tax Credit Program that was set to sunset in 2031 has successfully passed, ensuring the state can continue incentivizing landowners to voluntarily conserve farms, ranches and open space in the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond.
