Throughout April, Chancellor Austin A. Lane , the SIU Admissions team and university leaders traveled across all 17 counties of Southern Illinois as part of the annual Saluki Takeover Tour Southern Illinois.

Along the way, we visited approximately 55 high schools, connected with students, counselors and educators, celebrated future Salukis through "Put a Lid on It" moments and welcomed more than 800 alumni, students and community members to five Chancellor’s Receptions hosted by the SIU Foundation.

From Makanda and Lake of Egypt to Mount Vernon, Carterville and Red Bud, each stop reinforced what we already know: Southern Illinois believes in SIU, and SIU is committed to Southern Illinois.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed us, hosted us and joined us on the tour. Together, we're building a stronger future for our students, our communities and our region.

On May 30, dozens gathered in Carbondale for a special book signing celebrating the legacy of the late William “Will” Bushelle and his commitment to leadership, service and mentorship. The event was held at TRAXX, where Will worked as a student during his time at SIU.

Authors Dr. Bruce DeRuntz and Shannon Barnett signed copies of Work Ready, a book inspired by the leadership principles Will developed as a U.S. Navy SEAL and shared with generations of SIU students through the Leadership Development Program.

We were especially grateful to welcome Will’s parents, Bill and Paula Bushelle, back to Carbondale, along with Will’s friends and former classmates, for an evening of reflection, connection and storytelling.

All net proceeds from the book support the Will Bushelle Scholarship through the SIU Foundation, benefiting engineering students who are active-duty military members, reservists, veterans or ROTC participants.

In Episode 10 of The Impact Report, student researchers shared projects spanning a wide range of disciplines, from architecture and brain function to art and design, highlighting the incredible work taking place across campus.

The segment also spotlights the recipients of the Susan C. Thrasher Award, which provides funding for undergraduate students conducting research alongside faculty mentors. For many students, the award offers more than financial support—it provides hands-on experience, new opportunities and the confidence to pursue future academic and professional goals.

Made possible through the generosity of SIU alumna Susan C. Thrasher, the award continues to help students explore their passions, expand their knowledge and prepare for what comes next.

Thank you, Susan, for investing in the next generation of Saluki researchers.

On May 27, the SIU Student Health Center dedicated the Lou and Debby Callen Ocean Room, recognizing the Callens’ generous gift to support the continuation and enhancement of one of the most popular spaces within the Dawg Lounge.

A favorite among students, the Lou and Debby Callen Ocean Room provides a calming environment designed to help Salukis relax, recharge and manage the stresses of college life. The space features a massage chair and ocean-inspired sensory elements, creating a peaceful retreat in the heart of campus.

The Lou and Debby Callen Ocean Room is part of the Dawg Lounge, which offers a variety of wellness resources, including private relaxation rooms, art and coping tools, light and biofeedback machines, support dogs during the academic year, and monthly wellness activities.

The dedication celebrated the importance of student well-being and the impact philanthropy can have on the student experience.

Thank you, Lou ('72) and Debby Callen, for helping ensure Salukis have access to spaces and resources that support their health, wellness and success.

More than 150 business and community leaders representing 85 organizations and all 17 counties of Southern Illinois came together at the SIU Tedrick Welcome Center for the return of the Southern Illinois Leaders Breakfast.

Presented by Southern Illinois Now and hosted by the SIU Foundation, the event created space for leaders across the region to connect, share ideas and build momentum for Southern Illinois.

“Coming together as one region with one vision is rare and something we can all be proud of,” said Deb Barnett, executive director of Southern Illinois Now. “This event was more than a breakfast. It was designed to bring leaders into the same room to strengthen relationships, share ideas and continue the strong growth trajectory in Southern Illinois.”

Keynote speaker J. Scot Heathman, CEO of The Wedge Innovation Center and retired U.S. Air Force colonel, shared lessons from his 25 years of military service and his journey as a brain tumor survivor. Drawing on those experiences, he challenged attendees to develop a personal leadership mantra rooted in their values and lived experiences. His powerful message on resilience, courage and purpose concluded with a standing ovation.

“As an accelerator, the SIU Foundation creates meaningful opportunities for connection and engagement that strengthen relationships across Southern Illinois,” said Matt Kupec, vice chancellor for development and alumni relations and CEO of the SIU Foundation. “When leaders are engaged with one another and with the university, it creates lasting impact for our region.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the return of the Southern Illinois Leaders Breakfast a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when Southern Illinois comes together.
