🐱 Cat Master class.

This is sōng (松): the yielding quality at the heart of Qigong practice.
It’s so much more than “relaxation.”

Fully at ease, yet ready to respond in an instant.

Want to know what Sōng looks like, watch a cat.

Time for some self-care.

Know that spot at your temples you rub without thinking?
It’s just what the doctor ordered.

In Chinese Medicine it's called Taiyang — and it's one of the most-used points for headaches and eye strain.

Press firmly but gently, making slow circles away from the eyes.
Let your jaw soften.
30–60 seconds.

Stressed in your upper back and neck? Shake it out?

Principles Behind The Practice:

Eastern
In Qigong we call this fluidity Sōng (松). While often translated as "relaxed" or "loose," it is more nuanced.

One aspect is remaining active and responsive without any unnecessary effort. Another is a quality of settling — a downward release that lets the weight of the limbs drop and sink toward the ground.

In Chinese Medicine, held tension is a form of stagnation — Qi and Blood that have stopped moving freely.

Before we can employ Song, we first promote the free flow of Qi and Blood by breaking up any stagnation hindering it.

Ever notice how a dog doesn’t have tense shoulders?

In Qigong, Song (松) is the release of unnecessary muscular effort while staying active and responsive.

One simple practice for finding it: shake it like a wet dog.

We use shaking to help break up stagnation and release held tension.

Let your arms hang limp and loose at your sides—like heavy weights.

Start shaking your hands where they hang—like flopping fish.

Let the jiggly movement travel all the way up your arms.

Keep the arms heavy and the shoulders soft.

Continue for around 30 seconds.

Then stop.

What do you notice?

Calm in the palm of your hands.

Our eyes — and nervous systems — rarely get a break from the constant visual noise.

In Chinese Medicine, the eyes connect to the Liver.

In Qigong, we calm the Liver to help calm the mind.

Try this: cup your hands over your eyes for a minute or two.

You'd be in good company.

The two biggest issues we see in students at the start is:

– they don’t trust what they feel
– or they trust it too quickly

Qi can show up in different ways:

– tangible, like pressure or magnetic resistance
– subjective, like the rising sensation of anger or the sinking of grief

While not everything you “think” you feel is Qi—not everything subtle should be dismissed either.

The skill is learning the difference.

“What would a Daoist do?” borrows a moral frame that assumes there is a correct action waiting to be named. But Daoist thought doesn’t offer a rule—it offers an orientation from which “correct” action can arise.
