For Kids' Sake International (FKSI) is happy to share photos and updates from "An Evening of Heroes & Scholars" event on May 19th at the Branch Cafe & Market in Carbondale. This special evening celebrated the people whose generosity, service, and perseverance make our mission possible.

The evening began with highlights of FKSI's impact in 2025, followed by a new tradition of formally recognizing three supporters whose generosity and dedication made a notable difference in 2025. Business of the Year - DS Roofing & Custom Builders; Donor of the Year - Shelby Lewicki; and, Volunteer of the Year - Nadya Jayawardene.

The highlight of the evening was presenting the 6 FKSI Southern Illinois Scholarship winners: Lexia Land, Mallory Shewmaker, Presley Choate, Seth Duncan, Londynn Pontious and CJ Shiefer!

In the fall of 2024, owner Dennis Schlabach shared his desire to make an even greater impact and committed to monthly giving. In 2025 alone, the company contributed more than $22,000. FKSI's 2025 Donor of the Year is Shelby Lewicki. Shelby has supported FKSI for the past 18 years and remains one of the most loyal members of the Friends of FKSI monthly giving program. Nadya Jayawardene was named the 2025 FKSI Volunteer of the Year at Evening of Heroes & Scholars on May 19th - Nadya a 2026 Carbondale Community High School graduate, joined FKSI as an intern in the summer of 2025 and continued volunteering twice a week after school. Since then, she has stepped into a leadership role, helping train other volunteers and supporting nearly every aspect of FKSI’s work. Help us congratulate her!
