Why It’s “Women Veterans Recognition Day” – Not “Women Veterans Day”

On June 12th, we celebrate women Veterans and honor their incredible contributions, but it’s important to recognize the true meaning of the date and its official name.

June 12, 1948 marked a turning point in history: The signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. That’s why we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate service, remember history, and continue to uplift stories.

Nevertheless,

in a world which is still,
and in ever-more-inventive ways,
dangerous for us,

and especially in a world
which is still dominated
by patriarchal values and structures,

we need our elder-woman truth-tellers
today more than ever.

In 1913, Illinois became the first state east of the Mississippi River to grant women partial voting rights—a major milestone in the fight for suffrage.

The law allowed women to vote in presidential elections and for some local offices, but access was not equal. Black women, despite their activism and leadership within the suffrage movement, continued to face discrimination and barriers that often prevented them from exercising those rights.

The victory was the result of years of organizing by suffragists, including members of the National Woman's Party and other advocates who pushed lawmakers to expand women's political participation. While partial suffrage fell short of full voting equality, Illinois helped pave the way for broader change and demonstrated growing momentum for the movement nationwide.

Susan B. Anthony believed that riding a bike, which she did many times herself, was a symbol of women’s independence. A bicycle gave a woman the power to move freely without relying on men for transport. She once said in 1896, “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” She championed the bicycle as a part of women’s emancipation in the late 19th century.

Today, we find people still enjoying the freedom of riding a bicycle from the wind in their face to the freedom of exploring places where cars sometimes cannot go.
