The Wilkeson FS Rd 7710 Earth Day Clean Up was a huge success yesterday! 35 people volunteered 3-6 hours each, hauling out bags of garbage, hot tubs, tires, furniture, freezers, truck canopy.....you name it, it was picked up from FS Rd 7710 and brought down to the dumpster @ Coke Oven Park in Wilkeson.
We were signing people in & out, serving coffee, baked potatoes & homemade chili. The camaraderie was appreciated, supporting those cleaning up in the ditches, offering a hand and hauling off their loads is priceless. Great conversations were had around the fire pit. A good friend took photos from his drone giving us all a birds-eye view- thank you Roy.
There's a lot of abuse and misuse happening on FS Rd 7710/7720, especially now that the Carbon Canyon is closed off. Where there was once 1,000's of sq. miles to spread out in, many are now consolidated onto one Forest Service road with no where else to go and it shows.
On Clean-Up days, I experience camaraderie, satisfaction, pride and accomplishment that I don't get anywhere else. The glow usually lasts for about 24 hours and then it's time to move onto something else.
There's still a lot of work to be done, I heard it was pretty gross and overwhelming in places where no one wanted to clean up.
But for TODAY, together, we filled a dumpster. It's a win.

We can all help by taking care of the places we like to recreate in, it shows that we are appreciative & grateful for these places, showing them some respect goes a long way.
Thank you for your support!

It's a good thing the Pop Up Kitchen was approved, because not only are we serving food & beverages, but we'll be signing people In & Out during the Clean-up. - Check out the new attached Flyer, feel free to share.
We'll be setting up 2 Pop-Up Tents at Coke Oven Park, one for registration & information, the other for the outdoor kitchen which will be serving FREE coffee, bottled water and a Baked Potato Bar, complete with chili and condiments.
A fun tip I heard last night was that a RIVIAN Car Club may show up to help us. Their group shows up and helps clean up FS roads, build picnic tables, whatever they can do to help improve our public spaces.
Buckley Feed and Farm Supplies are providing heavy duty garbage bags for the clean-up, the dumpster is being provided by Fruit Growers Supply, Hosted by Carbon Glacier Mavericks & Gambler 500 Jeep Clubs REGISTRATION begins at 8:30am.
Hope to see you at the Clean-up!

You never forget your first glimpse of a Cascade Red Fox.
I use to see Fox in the Carbon Canyon, usually when I was driving home from work at dusk on Manley Moore Rd. a Fox would run across the road in front of my car.
But it's been over a decade or more since I've seen a Fox.

I found this Smithsonian magazine article about the Cascade Red Fox very interesting and informative, They're considered endangered, but if you're going to see one, it'll be in or near
Mt. Rainier National Park at higher elevations...
"Earth’s crammed with heaven
And every common bush afire with God;
But only he who sees, takes off his shoes—
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries."
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Even the scientists who study the animals rarely see them except on camera. But Gretchen Kay Stuart spent a season documenting them up close
