Just a reminder, today's the day that general law fishing regulations change for river, stream, and brook fishing. The switch occurs every year to help protect Maine's salmonids as they prepare to spawn in the fall.

Under general law, from August 16 to September 30, rivers, streams, and brooks remain open to open water fishing using artificial lures or flies only. Bait fish, smelt, and worms cannot be used under general law during this time. General law length and bag limits apply, except daily bag limit one landlocked salmon and one brook trout.

Always check the special fishing laws to see if the water you are fishing has special exceptions to the General Law. You can view special fishing laws at mefishwildlife.com/fishinglaws or use the map-based display of fishing laws called FLOAT at mefishwildlife.com/float.

‼️Fire Danger is HIGH and VERY HIGH Across the State of Maine‼️

August 13, 2025

🔥The Maine Forest Service has responded to multiple wildfires and continues to have resources committed to some extended attack fires. The fire danger around Maine is HIGH to VERY HIGH around the state and wildfire spread has been kept to a minimum.

🔥Conditions vary across the State of Maine depending on where you are located, but fires are occurring, and fuels are very susceptible to fire.

🔥Make sure you consult with your local Fire Department, Town Warden, or local Forest Ranger before conducting ANY open burning. In many parts of the state local authorities have implemented restrictions to open burning based on fire danger and their ability to respond to wildfires. The Maine Forest Service supports this effort and encourages NO open burning permits to be issued.

🔥The online open burning permit system is shut off. The Maine Forest Service will not be issuing any open burning permits currently.

🔥Increased staffing of engines and other wildfire suppression equipment statewide with Rangers and call when needed firefighters, are prepositioned around Maine.

🔥Increased aviation resources are available, including helitack, to provide quicker response to wildfires in remote areas of the State. The Maine Army National Guard Aviation resources are available to assist.

🔥Increased communication and coordination with our partners in the fire service, Northeast Forest Fire Protection Compact, Maine Emergency Management Agency, National Weather Service, and landowners in ongoing daily.

🔥If you see wildfire or smoke, please call 9-1-1 to report the fire. Quick notification of a wildfire and response helps to keep wildfires small.

🔥We urge you to be fire conscious when you are out recreating and enjoying all Maine has to offer. With your help we can help keep Maine green!🌲
