William Seymour College, therefore, embraces a distinctively Progressive Pentecostal spirituality coupled with a commitment to fostering the fullest intellectual potential of each student. The institution promotes freedom to critically engage contemporary social issues while facilitating a holistic approach to personal and social holiness as an authentic model of spiritual formation. Witness of Progressive Pentecostalism:
Rather than a denominational identification, Progressive Pentecostalism is a spirituality shared by those who, empowered by the Holy Spirit and their witness to the ministry of Christ, seek to address the spiritual, physical, and social wholeness of their communities and the world. We hold a high view of the authority of Scripture and the Lordship of Jesus Christ, while at the same time affirming the Christian value of biblical justice. Therefore, William Seymour College intentionally aligns itself with an Evangelical/Pentecostal heritage that affirms the Lordship and atoning work of Christ and His compassionate concern for the world. This witness is exhibited in the life and ministry of its namesake, William Joseph Seymour, the leader of the early 20th century Pentecostal revival, who courageously stood for equality of all people and called for unity among all Christian believers. It continues through the efforts of persons who identify in some way with the global, renewing work of the Spirit that provokes them to become pro-active agents in personal, ecclesial, and community transformation. William Seymour College approaches learning as an active pursuit that involves students in an educational journey that provides opportunities to engage ideas through teacher-student dialogues, hands-on experiences, and regular opportunities for critical reflection within the context of diversity and social awareness. Our commitment to being socially informed and engaged in issues of justice are reflected in both teaching practice and course content.
