CHARLES CLINTON BLACK

Trooper Charles Black was shot and killed while responding to a bank robbery at First National Bank of Biddeford in South Berwick, Maine just before 10 a.m. Trooper Black was off-duty that day, but was required to report to the municipal courthouse behind the bank to prosecute a traffic violation. He was in uniform when he responded to shouts from civilians on the street tha

t the bank was being robbed. As the two suspects ran from the bank one of them spotted Trooper Black and shot him five times. A bystander grabbed Trooper Black's service revolver and apprehended one of the suspects who had slipped and fallen behind. Both suspects were convicted of Trooper Black's murder and sentenced to life in prison. Both were convicted felons who had been released from prison - one of them only a week prior to the fatal bank robbery. Following their life sentence for Trooper Black's murder, both men were paroled in 1972. Trooper Black was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Maine State Police for six years. He was survived by his pregnant wife, who gave birth to a son, by his two other young sons, and by his sister and brother. The agency's annual Trooper of the Year award was named in his honor.

Over six months ago, I set a goal for myself: to participate in Boston's Run To Remember five years after hanging up my running shoes. Running there in 2014 was an eye-opening, emotional experience that indirectly led to the formation of the Trooper Black Foundation. I love being surrounded by runners and spectators who understand that remembrance matters and who are all there to pay tribute to the Ultimate Sacrifice made by so many of our First Responders. It’s been a very rough couple of weeks for First Responders here in New England, making events like this more important than ever, to assure that their sacrifices will Never Be Forgotten.

Yesterday meant more than crossing the finish line. I had a tribute poster made up to honor Dad’s memory, which was placed alongside the images of many other Fallen First Responders. It was also shown above the stage. Seeing the face of the father I never knew there, knowing that thousands more people honored his memory and bravery, brought overwhelming pride and heartbreak all at once.

It meant so much more to me than the fact that I finished the 5.1-mile course in 39:20, first in my age category, and more than three minutes faster than when I first ran the race 12 years ago.

I think Dad would have been proud.

And for those of you men age 60-69 who are planning on running the 2026 Trooper Black Foundation 5K for First Responders on October 24, 2026, my sights are set on taking home the first place medal for our age group that day!
The challenge is on!

While we gathered today to remember the names and sacrifices of the 91 men whose names are carved in granite at the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Augusta, another member of our Blue Family made the Ultimate Sacrifice.
Our hearts go out to the friends, family, and coworkers who are left devastated by this tragic loss.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced that a game warden died in a plane crash in the Franklin County town of Avon.

Eight days left to help!

Maine State Police Corporal Greg Ramp and his family lost their home and everything in it to a devastating fire on March 19. Thankfully, Greg, his wife Natasha, their two children, his K-9 partner Murph and all of their pets made it out safely.

While insurance will eventually help, payments are delayed -- and even then, they won’t come close to covering the full extent of what they’ve lost.

Please see below for how you can donate. Any amount, no matter how small, will help the Ramp family. The Trooper Black Foundation - a registered 501(c)(3), EIN # 84-2953745 - will give 100% of all donations received by Sunday, April 19 directly to the Ramp family.

If donating isn’t possible, sharing this post is another powerful way to support them.

Let’s show up for this family the way they’ve shown up for our community.

🚨 On Thursday, March 19, 2026, Maine State Police Corporal Greg Ramp and his family lost their home and everything in it to a devastating house fire in the Bangor area.
Thankfully, Greg, his wife Natasha, their two children, and all of their pets... including K-9 partner Murph made it out safely. But they are now starting over with nothing.
Greg has served with the Maine State Police since 2019, after spending 10 years as an electrician, and has been a dedicated K-9 handler since 2022.

Now it’s our turn to support him and his family in their time of need.

The Trooper Black Foundation (a registered 501(c)(3), EIN # 84-2953745) is collecting donations, and 100% of contributions made through April 19, 2026 will go directly to the Ramp family.

Every year the Maine State Police place a wreath at the graves of their Fallen Officers for the holiday season.
Thirteen wreaths are placed simultaneously around the State of Maine by current Troopers at 1300 hours (1:00 pm). If you listen to the audio of the video, those at Dad’s grave today were extremely punctual, with the church bell tolling once as they salute the wreath they just placed.
This annual tradition means a lot to our family.

🇺🇸Honoring Our Heroes on Nat'l First Responders Day🚒🚑🚓

Today we say thank you to the brave men and women who run toward emergencies when the rest of us often run away...our firefighters, police officers, EMTs, dispatchers, nurses, doctors, military and all first responders.

Your courage, compassion, and dedication make our communities safer every single day.

If you know a first responder, please take a moment to thank them today. A simple “thank you” means more than you know. ❤️

We’re so grateful for everything you do... not just today, but every day.
