Crazy to think that this was the first weekend that this parking lot wasn't full for the Cape Riverfront Market!
What a beautiful journey the 2021 market season has been! Getting to share most of the Saturday mornings with old Slow Food enthusiasts, new Slow Food enthusiasts, and general local food enthusiasts. We visited with current composter's as well as stated relationships with new composters. Some signed up for our on-going Downtown Cape Curbside Compost Program and other's with more time and energy rekindled compost systems of their own!
What is slow food? Why compost? Why does local food have more value than mass produced, genetically modified food? How does one begin to shift their consumption habits? What even goes in compost? These were ALL conversations we had with market goers outside (and inside) of the Slow Food SEMO Snail Shed at the western end of the market grounds.
While this year's market season has formally ended, that little green garden at the bottom of the screen has sparked LARGE conversations with even LARGER impacts! We look forward to continuing to paint this picture of a diversified local food economy, alongside a growing model of our curbside compost service, further helping complete the food cycle and repurpose food waste right here in our downtown community.
As we can continue to transition with the changing seasons, we have exciting plans for the garden, the continued evolution of our compost service, Farm to Table Dinners, and Education based gatherings. We'll continue to keep in touch digitally with our Facebook and Instagram accounts, but we also send out detail through our organization email list about public board meetings, events, and other news relative to Slow Food and our local food economy. If you or anyone you know feel called to join the Slow Food SEMO Organization, you can join on our website at slowfoodsemo.org! There you can also find more information about our mission, direction, and growing plans in the local community 😉
Our friends at Old Town Cape, Inc. also send out a weekly email about events in the downtown community. If you haven't already subscribed to their e-newsletter, shoot them a message and get signed up - you never when you'll see one of our events on there!
