The assumptions you make from afar about people with albinism, drives them into isolation. To know more about them, get closer to one. You get to realize they only lack melanin, not the capability.

Let's embrace a society where love, unity and acceptance thrives over misconceptions, discrimination and unwarranted h@te.

Support this initiative by leaving a like, a comment and sharing. It will go a long way.

ALBINISM: A THREAT TO EXPRESS FULL POTENTIALITIES.

This is a multifaceted issue aimed at addressing various aspects of human experience, including biology, psychology, sociology, and philosophy.
X-raying the challenges and considering the possible strategy to alleviate the plights of People with Albinism(PWAs).

WHAT IS ALBINISM?
Albinism is defined as a congenital condition characterized by the complete or partial absence of melanin production, resulting in pale skin, hair, and eyes.
Albinism is a rare genetic condition that affects people worldwide, regardless of ethnicity or gender.
According to the World Health Organization statistics, it shows that the Prevalence rate of Albinism affects about 1 in 18,000 to 1 in 20,000 people in the United States, while in other parts of the world, the occurrence can be as high as 1 in 3,000.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, the prevalence of albinism is estimated to be around 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 15,000 people.

Types of Albinism:
1. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA), which affects the eyes, hair, and skin,

2. Ocular albinism (OA), which affects only the eyes.

Albinism is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning that a person needs to inherit two copies of the mutated gene (one from each parent) to develop the condition. People with Albinism typically have a normal life expectancy, but they may face vision and skin problems, as well as social stigma and discriminations.

These are the major challenges faced by PWAs;
1. Vision impairment: Albinism can cause vision problems, including sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and increased risk of eye diseases.

2. Risk of skin cancer: Individuals with albinism are more susceptible to skin cancer due to their lack of melanin, which protects against UV radiation.

3. Social stigma: Unfortunately, people with albinism often face social stigma, discrimination, and marginalization, particularly in communities with limited understanding of the condition.

These experiences above can have profound psychological and social implications like:
1. Low self-esteem: Social stigma and discrimination can lead to low self-esteem, self-doubt, and anxiety.

2. Social isolation: People with albinism may feel isolated or excluded from social activities, further exacerbating feelings of loneliness.

3. Limited opportunities: In some communities, individuals with albinism may face limited access to education, employment, and healthcare due to discriminatory attitudes.

Nelson Mandela once said "The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life that never realized its full potential".

For every individual there is an expectation of fulfilment as to ascertain upliftment to achieving full potentials in all ramifications.
PWAs tend to be limited on account of the following:
1. Mismanagement of condition: PWAs are often born into families that have no clue on how to manage the condition to create a conducive environment for them to thrive and exhibit their potentials.

2. Societal expectations: Societal expectations and biases can limit opportunities and create barriers for individuals with albinism, hindering their ability to reach their full potential.

3. Internalized stigma: Internalized stigma and negative self-perception can also restrict individuals with albinism from pursuing their goals and aspirations.

4. Lack of representation: The lack of representation and visibility of people with albinism in media, education, and other areas can perpetuate stereotypes and limit opportunities.

After highlighting the various challenges faced by individuals with albinism. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes:
1. Education and awareness: Raising awareness about albinism and promoting education can help dispel myths and stereotypes.

2. Inclusive policies: Implementing inclusive policies and practices can help ensure equal access to opportunities and resources.

3. Empowerment and support: Providing empowerment and support programs can help individuals with albinism build confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.

In conclusion, Shelter for better Life foundation had based on research and survey with a case study of someone with albinism had seen the possibility in the rapid development of potential over the passage of time. With the cooperation of Government, cooperate/charitable organizations and Faith based organizations together we can address these challenges and also help create a more inclusive and supportive environment that allows individuals with albinism to express their full potential.
