A double thank you post! 👏

A committed crew of 1st grade parents has been visiting recess to help kids water the spring veggie seeds, and everyone's efforts show in the growth that's happening! 🌱

AND after the line-up whistle blows, our plants are still getting plenty of 💦 thanks to our friends at Its Green LLC. They donated our irrigation system in 2019 and answer our call every year to get it up and running for the season.

We are grateful for our supportive community!

How cute are these?! Thanks to Jamie Joncas for “digging” into fundraising efforts to sustain our garden programming. Let your kids pick their favorite pair at their class’s art gallery night and help us keep growing! 🥰🌱🧤

(If you’re stocked on gloves, but want to help us grow anyways, our fundraising link is in the first comment. In the season of many asks, thanks for considering!)

It was a busy Spring Planting Week 2026! We are so grateful to Coast of Maine Organic Products, Inc. for donating our seed starting soil once again. It made it easy for our coordinators to provide lesson plans and supplies for kindergarten parents to plant soil-blocked indoor mini-gardens that they'll observe as part of their Our Earth unit.

In keeping with our Pond Cove traditions, second graders sowed the garden with spring veggie seeds and started sunflower seeds saved from last fall in pots that they'll transplant to the garden later.

A school garden takes many hands and we appreciate those that support ours! 🫶🏽

Hello, 2026 gardening season! Many hands made FUN work this week as kindergarteners topped off all our raised beds with compost donated by our friends at Garbage To Garden. It was the perfect hands-on connection to their Our Earth curriculum unit! 😍 🪏 🪱

It’s safe to say our wondering about “will the milkweed that self-seeded last year come back?” has been answered! Happy monarchs, bees, and milkweed bugs and signs everywhere of well-fed caterpillars! Busily documenting to share with students next school year 😊.

Always a summer highlight to work with Cape Elizabeth Community Services campers and our awesome family volunteers to kick off our harvest and donation season to Judy’s Pantry! We beat the heat Tuesday by cutting and washing greens and arranging flowers for the pantry and snacked on sugar snap peas and mint water as a reward.

Our final spring recap: Third Grade!

Each year, all third graders work in teams to plant almost the entire garden for summer growing. This year they transplanted about 185 seedlings, plus sowed 8 long rows of bean, carrot, and radish seeds. We are especially excited for winter squash to grow up and over our new arch trellis, and for our native pollinator bed to fill in.

In keeping with tradition, each class also participated in our annual worm tally/longest worm competition. They spotted hundreds of worms, and the longest, though unobserved by any adults, clocked in at 8 inches! Classes earned bonus points by correctly answering trivia questions about soil health, planting in our Maine climate, pollinators, and companion planting.

Thank you to the third grade teachers for making time for this capstone gardening experience each year, to family volunteers for leading busy planting teams, and of course, to our seasoned third grade gardeners!

Family volunteers and Rec campers will help tend and harvest from the garden this summer and the produce will be donated to Judy's Pantry.

We are extra proud to deliver a 2nd grade spring gardening recap! These classes worked hard all spring in science to study plants, and they put that knowledge to work in the garden. They:

-Planted spinach, arugula, and radish seeds, and used teamwork to pick and wash their (smaller-than-hoped-for) harvest to take home and taste after our gloomy spring weather. See their feedback in the photos; it seems we have some future marketing professionals?!

-Started and transplanted sunflowers for summer growing at school, using seeds they saved last fall, and planted pole bean seeds to climb the sunflowers.

-Spread TONS of garden kindness around the community by donating extra seedlings and seeds to local preschools, the CE fire and police station, the Mooring at the Downs memory care home, where several beloved PC grandparents live or have lived, and planting a long row of them "for the birds" in a local home garden.

A big thanks to the 2nd grade teachers for allocating so much time to gardening, family volunteers for helping run gardening sessions and facilitating the community donations, and of course, the awesome 2nd grade gardeners!

Next recap: First Grade! In keeping with tradition, first graders planted salad mix seeds, checked on them faithfully at recess for a month, and harvested and washed their lettuce to take home or make a class salad. Many kids offered (honest) feedback via Google form. Sounds like there were some happy salad-loving moms—and one tortoise—in town.

Thank you, first grade teachers, for making time for gardening, for parent volunteers who helpfully staffed the salad spinners and the hose, and of course, our first grade gardeners/future food critics! 🥗

Did you know? We fund gardening supplies by community donations. Fundraising link in the comments to help us replenish our account for next season!
