The Cape Coral Iwo Jima War Memorial has had a major internal and external restoration from 15 Mar 2011 to 15 September 2011. The new granite cladding was placed on the pedestal base along with the original medallion Felix De Weldon created for this monument was reattached. This is an original Felix De Weldon approximately 1/3rd size version of his 24 ft. W X 48 ft. L X 70 ft. H, 100 ton bronze US

MC Iwo Jima War Memorial Monument located in Arlington, VA. De Weldon also created the 1/3 sized Parris Island, SC and Quantico, VA sisters. The Parris Island and the orignal Quantico, VA were cast from the same mold as Cape Coral's. The Quantico and Parris Island versions were part of the mighty 7th War Bond Tour that began in 11 May 1945. The Cape Coral Iwo Jima Monument was commissioned by the developers of Cape Coral [the Rosen Brothers] in the early to mid 1960's and was dedicated in the Rose Garden of Cape Coral in 1965 [the 1965 dedication is well documented]. The Iwo Jima Monument is currently located in the Veterans Area of The Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve adjacent to Veterans Memorial Pkway west bound lane. An Urn w/ USMC Medallion containing Sand from Green Beach 1, Iwo Jima has been placed into the east side Rock area of the Monument.
