Fireflies have the most devastating love story on Earth and it plays out in your backyard every summer.

THE STORY:

→ Firefly larvae live underground for 1-2 YEARS
→ They emerge as adults with ONE purpose: find a mate
→ Adult lifespan: 7-21 days
→ They have NO MOUTH. They cannot eat. Ever.
→ Every calorie they have is from their time as a larva
→ They spend their entire short life flying and flashing a species-specific code
→ The female sits in the grass and flashes BACK if she's the right species
→ If he finds her: they mate, she lays eggs, they both die
→ If he DOESN'T find her: they both die anyway

The code is everything:
→ Each species has a unique flash pattern (frequency, color, timing)
→ Wrong pattern = ignored
→ Right pattern = love
→ Some predatory females mimic OTHER species' codes to lure males in — and eat them

Why they're disappearing:
→ Light pollution drowns out their signals (they can't see each other)
→ Pesticides kill larvae in the soil
→ Habitat loss
→ Mowing removes habitat

Two years underground. Seven days to find love. In the dark. With no mouth. Using a light only she can answer.

And we leave the porch light on.
