Water's been low, so we aren't seeing the dumping of the Lake O outflows into our waterways giving us some clarity, restoring sea grasses and a respite from Blue and Red tides.

It's coming, though. The good news is that there's been GREAT progress on SWTAs along the Caloosahatchee and all of the Lake O outflows. Thank you to Brian Mast Congressman Brian Mast Congressman Byron Donalds for your support of these initiatives.

This week’s water quality snapshot shows how quickly conditions can shift in our St. Lucie Estuary and the southern Indian River Lagoon.

Compared to last week’s B grade, this week dropped slightly to a B-. Inflows into the estuary decreased (from 1,282 cfs ➝ 926 cfs), and salinity levels showed more stress for oyster habitat. At the same time, Lake Okeechobee’s algal bloom potential expanded dramatically—from covering about 55% of the lake last week to roughly 85% this week.

The good news: seagrass visibility and oxygen levels remain fair to good, which gives hope for habitat recovery if conditions stabilize.

Thanks to the dedication of our FOS FLOWSS citizen scientists, we can keep a close eye on these weekly changes. Their efforts help us better understand how our waterways respond to rainfall, lake levels, and algae activity—and how we can all advocate for a healthier estuary. 💙🌊
