On a radiant day filled with sunshine, Kitopeake elementary school's second-grade class embarked on a journey of discovery in the garden, unlocking its wonders and sowing seeds of growth. As they explored the garden, they learned its rules, laying the groundwork for a day of exploration and development. The delightful tour was followed by an engaging activity where they planted flowers in pots, taking home not just a new plant but a budding sense of responsibility. Renowned illustrator Gail Scott captivated the young minds with her vibrant artwork on monarch butterflies and caterpillars, igniting curiosity and inspiring a love for nature. Fully engaged, the students asked thoughtful questions, actively absorbed knowledge, and developed tangible skills through hands-on activities like planting eggplants, peppers, and herbs. A visit to the strawberry patch allowed them to pick and savor their own harvest, relishing the rewards of their labor. Participating in soybean planting in the experimental section instilled a sense of contribution, while a nutritious snack rounded off a day that empowered these young gardeners with valuable insights and experiences.

New Roots Garden had the privilege of hosting Kitopeake Elementary School's second-grade class for an inspiring day of learning and growth, divided into two engaging sessions. During the first session on May 11, students received a warm welcome and introduction to the garden, followed by a guided tour that sparked their curiosity and wonder. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the children's enthusiasm and energy remained unwavering as they explored the garden's vibrant spaces. The excitement continued with a special reading session led by acclaimed author and illustrator Gail Scott, who brought her captivating book on monarch butterflies to life. Inside the greenhouse, students nurtured their green thumbs by planting their own flower pots, taking home not just a plant, but the memories of a day well-spent. Although the weather didn't permit outdoor planting, the children joyfully participated in hula hoops and tag games, showcasing their innate ability to find joy in every moment. The day concluded on a nourishing note, with a healthy and colorful snack that satisfied both body and soul, leaving a lasting impression on the young minds about the importance of positive experiences and personal growth.

We're delighted to announce that the CCCS first-grade children took the initiative in preparing the soil for a new crop of vegetables, gaining hands-on insight into the crucial role worms play in the process, after having blessed some of these worms in a special ceremony just the week before, highlighting the children's expanding awareness of the interconnectedness of life and their growing appreciation for the tiny creatures contributing to their food. With infectious enthusiasm, they learned about the Three Sisters garden (corn, pole beans, and squash), and also planted tomatoes and peppers, while harvesting ripe strawberries and relishing the fruits of their labor, followed by a nutritious snack of roasted veggies.

On Sunday, the Worm Blessing ceremony took place in the garden, where a group of dedicated Committee members and community visitors braved the crisp air to participate in this special event. Following the blessing, the children and community members released worms into the vegetable beds throughout the garden. Afterwards, the community was invited to tour the grounds, which featured two new greenhouses. Lunch was served in a designated area, and despite the chill in the air, the event was a success, with all attendees having a good time.

Last Wednesday was an extraordinary day for the New Roots family and the Cape Charles Christian School, where children connected with nature in a vibrant garden experience. Upon arrival, our Pomatoes plants were eagerly planted by the children in specially prepared clear containers from last week. The young gardeners also crafted large flower pots and planted tomatoes, beets, watermelon and a peaceful snack. In celebration of Earth Day, the children created their own symbolic trees using fruit and vegetables, empowering them to make a positive impact.
