GEAR Built in 1941 as a movie house, the Historic Palace Theatre was designed by German Architect Alfred M. Lubin.

Arts Enter is a non-profit organization that offers visual and performing arts classes and programs in conjunction with its ownership and operation of the Historic Palace Theatre in Cape Charles, Virginia. Two strikingly beautiful, original 8' x 30' hand painted murals adorn the interior walls of the theatre. These murals compliment the building's Art Deco style that includes terrazzo floors, wal

nut paneling and floor to ceiling foyer mirrors. Many people remember the Palace Theatre as a movie house; one which has been in existence as long as anyone can remember. But the Palace began much like it is being run today: as a performing arts center. The original opening of the Palace was postponed one week; an ad in the March 12, 1942 edition of The Northampton Times cites delays in the arrival of building materials, due to the more urgent need for the materials in the War. After great anticipation, the building was finally completed and the theater opened. The first film shown on the big screen was “Rage in Heaven” starring Ingrid Bergman. Only a few days later, the Palace inaugurated its stage performances with a live presentation of Barney Rapp and his New Englanders. Today, the arts come alive with original theatrical, musical, comedy and dance productions and movie screenings throughout the year.
