📚 EDUCATIONAL MONDAY: NEVER FEED A COLD KITTEN 🐱❤️
One of the most important things to know when caring for a newborn or neonatal kitten is this:
🚨 NEVER FEED A COLD KITTEN. WARMTH MUST COME FIRST.
Newborn kittens are unable to regulate their own body temperature, and when they become hypothermic (too cold), their bodies begin to shut down. Their digestive system also does not function properly when they are cold.
Feeding a cold kitten can be extremely dangerous. A cold kitten may not be able to properly digest the formula, and feeding can increase the risk of aspiration—where milk enters the lungs instead of the stomach. This can lead to pneumonia, respiratory distress, and can be fatal.
🌡️ WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
1️⃣ WARM THE KITTEN FIRST.
Gently warm the kitten using a safe heat source, such as a heating pad on LOW, a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel, or a properly regulated incubator. Always make sure the kitten has room to move away from the heat source to prevent overheating or burns.
2️⃣ MAKE SURE THE KITTEN IS WARM BEFORE FEEDING.
A kitten should be adequately warmed before attempting to feed. If a kitten is severely cold, weak, limp, or unresponsive, seek help from an experienced neonatal rescue or veterinarian immediately.
3️⃣ NEVER USE COW’S MILK. 🚫🥛
Cow’s milk is not an appropriate substitute for a mother’s milk or kitten milk replacer. It can be difficult for kittens to digest and may cause diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. In a fragile newborn kitten, severe diarrhea and dehydration can quickly become life-threatening.
Always use a properly formulated kitten milk replacer when supplemental feeding is necessary, following the product’s directions or guidance from an experienced neonatal caregiver or veterinarian.
❤️ REMEMBER: WARMTH COMES BEFORE FOOD.
Newborn kittens are incredibly fragile and can deteriorate very quickly. If you find a cold, weak, or orphaned kitten, please reach out for help as soon as possible. The right care at the right time can make all the difference.
