SCV Urban Water Management Plan 5 Year Review
The draft is now available!

Review period has begun! The Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency will hold a public hearing for their upcoming Urban Water Management Plan on April 28th, 6PM in person or via Zoom.

Appendices still not available to the public. We Object! How can the public review the document without these vital background reports? You can download the draft and find out about the upcoming public hearings here. https://yourscvwater.com/uwmp

Are you worried about an adequate water supply for current residents with all the new development? Are you worried about overdrafting the Santa Clara River so much that water quality is impaired and wildlife is affected? This is the Plan that the Water Agency will use to decide whether there is water for new development. It is important that it is accurate. You can help make sure that happens with your involvement. If you would like to be part of the SCOPE UWMP review team, please send an email to [email protected], and we will be in touch.

SCOPE has presented its 2026 “You’ve Done Something Good for the
Environment” award to College of the Canyons Professor Jeannie Chari.
The award was presented at a Biodiversity Walk on Tuesday, led by Professor
Chari, where several groups participated .

SCOPE has presented this award to members of the community since 1998.
Our members have chosen individuals who have given their time to
environmental issues for many years. We try to find the people behind the
scenes that just make things happen, keep campaigns going and work to make
our community the best it can be.

Professor Chari fits that description. As an environmental science and biology
teacher, Jeannie Chari has a passion for our local plants and animals. Through
her work at the college, she has shared that passion, not only with students, but
also with our whole community. She leads campus biodiversity projects,
including native plant projects and the "Bee Campus USA" initiative. She also
conducts campus garden walks, bird identification tours, and science workshops
on campus for students and members of the community.
She is especially known for leading the COC Biodiversity Initiative and campus
bee-friendly programs. She was instrumental in bringing the SCV Eco-film Fest
to the COC campus.

Past recipients of this award have been Henry Schutlz for the conservation
hikes he led, the Historical Society for planting oaks, John Ahart, Hart High
teacher for establishing an environmental science class, Alex Florimonte for
scenes that just make things happen, keep campaigns going, and work to make
pollution and making people aware of the beauty of “Dark Skies”, Jerry
Murphey for actions in the capacity of “riverkeeper”, hiking and walking the
Santa Clara River to report inappropriate activities.

City, Keep Our Oak Ordinance Strong!
UPDATE
We know you all care about our native oak trees, and now the City Council knows that, too. Thanks to all your letters and all of you who spoke at the March City Council meeting, the weakening of our oak ordinance is off the table for further review. Thanks, everyone, for making a difference and saving our local trees.
BUT it may return in the future, so stay tuned!
Our first ordinance upon becoming a city was passed to protect our oak trees that were being destroyed by development. The proposed changes would have allowed thousands of oaks to be removed, even if they are heritage oaks. If you would like to read our City's original ordinance, you can find it HEREhttps://santaclarita.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/42/migration/Oak%20Tree%20Preservation%20Guidelines.pdf
