SCOPE has presented its 2026 “You’ve Done Something Good for the
Environment” award to College of the Canyons Professor Jeannie Chari.
The award was presented at a Biodiversity Walk on Tuesday, led by Professor
Chari, where several groups participated .
SCOPE has presented this award to members of the community since 1998.
Our members have chosen individuals who have given their time to
environmental issues for many years. We try to find the people behind the
scenes that just make things happen, keep campaigns going and work to make
our community the best it can be.
Professor Chari fits that description. As an environmental science and biology
teacher, Jeannie Chari has a passion for our local plants and animals. Through
her work at the college, she has shared that passion, not only with students, but
also with our whole community. She leads campus biodiversity projects,
including native plant projects and the "Bee Campus USA" initiative. She also
conducts campus garden walks, bird identification tours, and science workshops
on campus for students and members of the community.
She is especially known for leading the COC Biodiversity Initiative and campus
bee-friendly programs. She was instrumental in bringing the SCV Eco-film Fest
to the COC campus.
Past recipients of this award have been Henry Schutlz for the conservation
hikes he led, the Historical Society for planting oaks, John Ahart, Hart High
teacher for establishing an environmental science class, Alex Florimonte for
scenes that just make things happen, keep campaigns going, and work to make
pollution and making people aware of the beauty of “Dark Skies”, Jerry
Murphey for actions in the capacity of “riverkeeper”, hiking and walking the
Santa Clara River to report inappropriate activities.
