Update on the pirates! They are still too small - just approaching 2 lbs now - for surgery but Bartholomew will require both eyes removed. It is still undecided if female Cornelia will lose both eyes. All four have varying degrees of vision changes from the infection ranging from partial to complete blindness.

You all know by now what day it is, and it is an unbelievable one at that! Today we have 32 new members of the cool kid club - 20 females and 12 males are out of the game and sporting ear ink. Thirty-two new tattoos and so, so many babies prevented. Huge shout out to the veterinary team who make this possible 🥰 More TED talks coming in the near future but for today we celebrate 32 - happy Tattoo Tuesday! 🥳

PS: TKL director Heather's labeling system - pure perfection. No one questions what that means on a cat carrier 😆

It's Tattoo Tuesday! You know we couldn't let today go without a little TED talk, even if it is late 😁 Tonight's episode is both an update and a discussion, and the two go hand in hand. The update first - the kitten group introduced last week has improved with medical care. One kitten will be able to keep both eyes as well as sight, one kitten will likely lose sight in one eye but keep the actual eye, and the other two will very likely need both eyes removed. Although they still look wicked, the pressure in the eyes is decreasing so they actually feel much better than they did. These are great things - the kittens have been taken into rescue, are receiving care, and feeling better. We can all breathe a tiny collective sigh of relief. The problem has been handled. The flip side of this is what we need to discuss, though. The problem is not actually solved. These kittens are housed but they are still homeless. There are not enough homes for "typical" cats and kittens, there are even fewer for medically complex or special needs kits. As a rescue, saying yes to taking in these kittens, or any kittens for that matter, means other equally deserving kits will live and die on their own out in the elements. This is a literal statement and it is true for any responsible rescue, not just us. Resources are finite, space is limited. That collective sigh of relief is the sound of a death sentence being handed down for others. Both sides of this coin deserve discussion. We can and do celebrate the gains these kits have made and need everyone else to realize the cost of these gains go beyond financials. Rescues aren't a solution, rescues are only a support system for a very small percentage who actually need it. The only solution is to stop the cycle completely.
