Stark County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Stark County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Established June 25, 1988 to provide an opportunity for Sorors in Stark County to have a greater impact on social issues in their communities. Paul A.M.E.

The Stark County Alumnae Chapter was formed in response to a call for action by local sorors who resided in or around Canton, Ohio and affiliated with the Akron Canton Alumnae Chapter of the sorority. Although there was a good relationship among the sorors, there was growing apprehension on the part of the Stark County resident sorors that much of the focus of the sorority activities were on Akron

and Summit County issues. This was true primarily due to the fact that the great majority of sorors in the chapter had no connection to the Stark County Community nor the issues facing it. There was a consensus among the Stark County sorors that we needed a local chapter to be established to provide an opportunity for the sorors who resided in Stark County, which included Alliance, Canton and Massillon, to have a greater impact on social issues in those communities. They also wanted to have a means for African American women in the Stark County community who were interested in and eligible for membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, to have a local chapter with which to affiliate. Being visionaries, sorors chose to focus on a County Wide effort as opposed to a City-Wide Chapter so that concentrated efforts would be made to address the entire county as opposed to a specific City. Although National requirements require a certain amount of geographical distance between alumnae chapters, we did not want to be faced with a further separation down the line and therefore, determined that the entire county should be addressed in our application for a charter. A written request was mailed to all Deltas who were able to be located and were known to be originally from or currently residing in the Stark County area to join in the quest to have a new Midwest Regional Chapter established. Seventeen sorors, later known as the Charter Members of the Stark County Alumnae then set to work to determine the requirements needed to establish a new chapter. This research and work resulted in the receipt of a Charter from the Grand Chapter on Sunday, June 25, 1988. The receiving of the Charter was celebrated during a special ceremony held at St. Church in Canton, Ohio.

Today, the Stark County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was proud to participate in the Juneteenth Community Festival in partnership with the League of Women Voters.

As we honored the significance of Juneteenth and the continued pursuit of freedom, equity, and justice, we were reminded that civic engagement is a powerful part of that legacy. Through voter education and voter registration assistance, we helped community members understand the importance of making their voices heard at the ballot box.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a long-standing commitment to Social Action, and our chapter remains dedicated to empowering our community through education, advocacy, and service.

Freedom is strengthened when we are informed, engaged, and ready to vote.

For years the Stark County Alumnae Chapter has had a beautiful partnership with the Jamaica Alumnae Chapter. Each year we collaborate on projects that align with the International Awareness and Involvement programmatic thrust. This year, with the help of our Chapter Sorors, Wendy Greco and the wonderful women of Spade, women's products were given to Melody House Community Home for Girls.

We see a need and we meet the need, regardless of borders. We are proud to be a Chapter that impacts the local community and extends our service beyond borders through meaningful partnerships rooted in sisterhood, service, and love.

For years the Stark County Alumnae Chapter has had a beautiful partnership with the Jamaica Alumnae Chapter. Each year we collaborate on projects that align with the International Awareness and Involvement programmatic thrust. This year, with the help of Soror Carla Sarratt, Sorors Latoya Nicole and Sonya L Wade were able to deliver coloring books, crayons and chalk to the Salvation Army Arthur Wint Basic School. Happy Pride Month to our sorors, partners, and friends!

Delta Sigma Theta has always stood for love, inclusion, and respecting the full dignity of every person. While we remain anchored in that legacy, we also acknowledge the need to continue to evolve with intention by championing affirming policies, and forging a culture where every member is seen, valued, and protected.

This Pride Month, we honor and celebrate the beautiful diversity and strength of the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our commitment to being allies in the fight for a better future where the freedom to love and exist in one's authentic identity is not contingent on the political climate. Especially when that freedom is being challenged, we choose to show up louder, love harder, and stand firmer in our commitment to justice for all.
