What better way to kick off a new year of Scouting than an adventure on Block Island?

Friday afternoon, the Scouts of Canton Troop 77 packed up their bikes, camping gear, food and supplies and headed for the 4 PM ferry to Block Island.

Our destination was the island’s Boy Scout campground. No electricity. No running water. Everything we needed for the weekend had to come in with us. ⛺

After setting up camp, we headed into town for pizza at Wetherbee’s before returning to camp for an evening of rank work and time around the campsite.

🍳 Saturday started early and with a big breakfast. Scrambled eggs with diced ham, fresh fruit and hash browns. The boys made deli sandwiches, packed their lunches and got the bikes ready for a full day exploring the island.

🚲 Then we hit the road.

The Scouts biked their way around Block Island, stopping at some of its most iconic spots:

🌊 The nearly 200-foot Mohegan Bluffs
💡 Southeast Lighthouse
🥾 Rodman’s Hollow
🎨 Block Island’s famous Painted Rock

At Painted Rock, the boys even got to leave a small Troop 77 mark using some wet paint left behind by a previous artist.

Next stop, Crescent Beach! 🏖️

The boys ate their packed lunches on the beach, then spent the afternoon swimming and body surfing in the waves before getting back on the bikes and returning to camp.

Back at the campsite, it was time to gather firewood and get dinner going. 🔥🌭

Saturday night's menu included hot dogs cooked around the fire, a potato, carrot and onion hash, and cookies for dessert. Add some music, a campfire and a group of tired Scouts, and it was a good way to finish a long day.

Sunday morning came early. The boys broke down camp, cleaned the site, packed the bikes and gear and headed back into town to catch the 10 AM ferry home. ⛴️

And because no Scout trip goes exactly according to plan, we also managed to work our way through four flat tires and a few other bike mechanical issues! 🛞🔧

They figured it out, kept moving and finished the adventure together.

Block Island was a great start to Troop 77's camping year, and we're only getting started.

⚜️ IS YOUR SON READY FOR HIS OWN ADVENTURE?

Troop 77 gives boys the chance to camp, hike, bike, learn outdoor skills, build confidence, develop leadership skills and spend time outdoors with friends.

If you have a boy in 6th grade through high school who might enjoy weekends like this, we'd love to have him check out Canton Troop 77.

There is no need to already know how to camp. That's what Scouting is for.

📩 Reach out to Troop 77 to learn more, visit a meeting, or find out how your son can join us on an upcoming adventure.

Stay tuned. There is a lot more ahead for Troop 77 this year! ⚜️🏕️🥾🚲
