Monday: July 22, 2024

Priority Waste is still in the process of delivering carts. They will be working throughout the week to make sure all residents receive their new carts before Monday, July 29. If you do not receive your cart by Friday, July 26, please call Canton’s Division of Public Works at 397-1011.

Beginning Monday, July 29, Priority Waste will move to automated collections. The new carts will replace the current collection protocol of using 32-gallon containers and garbage bags. All garbage must be placed inside the blue cart in order to be collected. Anything left outside the cart will not be collected.
Please note, similar to the existing practice, Priority Waste will allow residents two bulk items per week (i.e. couch, entertainment center, etc.). No special arrangements are required and there is no extra fee.

In addition to automated collection starting, all residential yard waste collections will revert back to your normal collection day beginning next week. Please make sure all garbage, recycling and yard waste is placed at the curb by 6:30 am on your regular collection day to ensure pick-up.

Update

Thank you to our residents for bearing with us through the first of two waste hauling transitions happening this month. We completely understand, and share, your frustrations as many of us also live in the community. These are extraordinary circumstances and we want you to know that Canton has taken extraordinary measures to help mitigate the negative impact on your weekly collections. Believe it or not, Canton is faring better than many other communities but we continue to work around the clock on this issue.

The first transition from GFL to Priority Waste two weeks ago has resulted in a truck shortage that affected communities throughout metro Detroit, and caused many delays. Priority continues to make progress in completing scheduled collections. If your house is missed, please leave items by the curb until they are collected.

Yard waste pickup will continue on Saturdays for the next two Saturdays, July 20 and 27. Beginning the week of July 29, yard waste pickup will resume on your usual collection day.

The second transition begins the week of July 29 when we move from manual to automated services, utilizing the new, blue carts that have been delivered to your homes. Please do not use the new carts until July 29. Priority Waste has purchased 16 new trucks to perform automated pickups in Canton, but be aware that not all of the trucks will be painted when they hit the streets on July 29.

Your patience would be greatly appreciated. Please do not take your frustrations out on the Canton staff or Priority haulers. They are all working very hard to provide you with service during this transition.

Again, thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation as we change waste haulers and move to automated service in Canton. If you have any questions, please email our Municipal Services Department at [email protected] or visit www.cantonmi.gov/216.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Nagle Paving has completed the concrete work in the subdivisions. They will begin milling operations on 6/19 and will follow behind with paving operations on 6/20. The project will be substantially complete for Central Park #1

1. Please ask residents to have their lawn sprinkler systems turned off while work is occurring in front of their homes. The excess water can make the work more difficult for the contractor, especially if it is filling open holes in the pavement.

2. Tell residents not to drive through tack for asphalt roads - please tell them not to drive on milled, tacked surfaces as the tack can coat tires and is very difficult to remove if it gets on cars. They can drive on milled surfaces as long is that is not tack on it. Tack is a dark oil-like sticky petroleum based product that helps new asphalt to the old asphalt milled surface.

3. In the event of limited access to mailboxes, know that the USPS will hold mail at the post office if they cannot get to mail boxes.

4. The contractor will assist in getting trash receptacles picked up at the end of the drive on trash day if driveways are blocked due to construction. This requires residents to have their trash out to the curb in a timely manner.

5. Lastly, please remind residents that we understand the construction work may be inconvenient, but bear with us as we do the work and we will try to minimize the disruption and the time we are in each sub.

6. Please slow down when going through construction areas since there may be workers present, or it may be down to 1 lane and you need to watch for oncoming traffic. Please be patient during the milling and paving operations.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, GFL will not collect garbage, yard waste or recycling on Monday, September 4 and all collections will be delayed by one day next week. GFL will resume their regular collection schedule on Monday, September 11.

Curbside collection of yard-waste will remain on Saturdays. We understand residents may have an excessive amount due to last week’s storm. However, we are asking residents to please adhere to GFL’s collection guidelines.

Twigs, branches, brush, pruning, and wood debris MUST be tied with heavy twine into bundles no longer than three to four feet in length, with branches not exceeding 1 ½ inches in diameter, and weighing no more than 50 pounds. Having your branches bundled will help ensure timely pickup. Residents with large trees and or limbs on private property will need to work with their HOAs or a private landscaping company for removal.

Residents also have the option of utilizing collection dumpsters at the DPW. GFL has provided three yard-waste dumpsters for residential drop-off. Residents can utilize these dumpsters for large limbs/branches and excessive amounts of debris. The dumpsters are placed on the front lawn of the DPW, located at 4847 Sheldon Road. Please note, these dumpsters are for yard-waste ONLY. Any spoiled food from the power outage will have to be put at the curb on your regular collection day.

In addition to yard waste, GFL is seeing an increase in bulk items at the curb. Bulk items refer to large, bulky items such as appliances and furniture. Please note, Canton’s Ordinance requires refrigerator and freezer doors to be removed before they are set out. Hot water tanks and dehumidifiers must also be empty of all fluids.

GFL is working to collect all items on your regular collection day. However, if any bulk items are left behind, please keep them at the curb. GFL will have additional trucks out this Saturday, September 2 to complete collection of bulk items. Residents are also encouraged to report a missed pickup at:
