Program Description:
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the chapter hosted a virtual community education program entitled “Strong Minds, Strong Communities: Mental Health, Identity, and Healing in the Black Community.” The purpose of the program was to increase awareness of mental health concerns affecting African Americans, particularly Black men, while promoting healthy coping strategies, resilience, community engagement, and access to mental health resources.
The presentation addressed several important topics including the impact of racial identity development on youth mental health, the effects of racial discrimination and microaggressions, cultural beliefs surrounding emotional expression and help-seeking behaviors, historical trauma and community distrust, and the importance of community support systems as protective factors for mental wellness.
Participants were encouraged to engage in discussion regarding societal definitions of strength, mental health stigma within the Black community, and practical ways individuals can support the emotional well-being of family members, youth, and fellow community members. Emphasis was placed on normalizing conversations about mental health and recognizing the value of seeking support when needed.
Program Objectives:

Promote healthy discussions surrounding emotional wellness and help-seeking behaviors.
Explore the impact of racial identity, discrimination, and historical trauma on mental health outcomes.
