The Reservoir Pond Preservation Association is an organization that was founded in 1990 to protect and preserve the quality of the water and biology of the Pond. This organization through donations from neighbors and abutters to the pond have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars since 1990 to control exotic w**d growth in the pond and preserve its beauty and usefulness for recreational purposes. It's working great, too!

You might be asking yourself what are exotic w**ds? The short answer is that exotic w**ds are water plants which are not native to our area, and that have been introduced to the pond from other parts of the world. The plants originally were transported here as aquarium plants and on watercraft that have been moved from other areas of the country to ponds in our area. These exotic plants (eurasian milfoil and fanwort are two that tend to overtake our pond) are transported into the pond. These plants do not have natural deterrents to their growth in our environment. Additionally runoff water and storm drains can add excessive nutrients to the water. The alien w**ds grow unchecked: choking out native natural water plants in the pond. Unstopped these w**ds can grow to the point that the pond becomes more like a swamp than a pond. Fish are harmed due to resulting reductions in oxygen and increased water temperatures.
What can you do to help? First, as a neighbor to the Pond your actions can have a direct effect on the long-term health of the Pond. As you may be aware the street drains in the area drain into Reservoir Pond. While there are many natural nutrients that feed the plants that run into the Pond, we as residents around the Pond are frequently responsible for adding nutrients and pollutants to the Pond.
Here are some tips to help keep the Pond healthy:
Do not dump anything into the street catch basins or into the pond. These drains are for rainwater only. Dispose of chemicals, detergents and other waste material properly.
Take precautions when fertilizing your lawn and plants. Do not fertilize when heavy rain is expected.(it will be washed down the drains or directly into the pond) Sweep fertilizer off driveways, street, sidewalks back onto your lawn. Lightly water-in fertilizer on your lawn to ensure it benefits your lawn not the pond w**ds.
Pick up oil and chemical spills on your driveway with absorbent material and discard appropriately. Do not use your garden hose as a mop or broom to wash away oil, grease, chemicals, lawn clippings or any other waste. Call the town for proper disposal instructions.
The Reservoir Pond Preservation Assoc needs your help to continue in its effort to maintain the quality of the Reservoir Pond. Pond abutters and other users of the pond are asked to contribute the annual member fee of $100 per household. Other donations are welcome. Membership dues or donations can be sent to:
