Late July brings some of the hardest conditions of the year on a deer herd. Heat stress reduces feed intake, slows weight gain, and puts added strain on lactating does and growing fawns at a point when they can least afford it. Water demand climbs sharply, and a source that was adequate in May can fall short by August.

Check troughs and waterers daily during this stretch, keeping an eye on both volume and cleanliness, since standing warm water fouls quickly and can discourage drinking. Shade access matters just as much. Deer without adequate cover during peak afternoon heat will burn energy they should be putting toward condition and growth. A few small adjustments now can carry the whole herd through the rest of summer in better shape.
