Driven by a deep passion for animals, Jodie Richers founded Dogs on Death Row in 2007, followed by Cats on Death Row, Horses on Death Row and now Habitats For Dogs and Cats. Having worked in the nonprofit arena for many years

as the director for One Child At A Time (an international aid and adoption organization), and also as a board member for Children's Charities of America, Jodie posesses a skill set ideal for leveraging dollars into the most efficient action possible to save the greatest number of dogs and cats. She is also committed to educating the public about the inhumane nature of gassing and heart prick as a means of killing animals. Although Jodie is the heart of this and many other animal charities, many people contribute their time, talent, and treasure to keep us going. We hope that you, too, will become a valued Habitats For Dogs and Cats supporter and friend. We pride ourselves on our fiscal responsibility. Our overhead is less than 1%.

The Whitt family is reeling after losing their adorable puppy yesterday when he suffocated in a Cheetos bag. Hayley Whitt writes, “Our puppy Braxton, 6 months old, American Staffordshire mix had just gotten neutered a week prior to this incident... so he had a cone over his head to prevent him from licking or chewing at his stitches... he usually would sleep in his cage but because of the cone we were letting him sleep on the couch for the next 2 weeks until he healed up, it was early in the morning September 19, 2020 when I put him and his little sister Cali (2 month pitbull) in the kitchen and put up the gate while we were getting ready for the day... an hour later we hear whining from Cali and end up back In the kitchen to find our little baby boy Braxton with no cone on... & with a Hot Cheetos bag over his head...not moving or breathing... we both panicked and rushed him to the closest vet where they told us they were very sorry but there was nothing they could do... we later discovered how we think he got the cone off and got up on the table to the chip bag... he got his cone stuck on one of the chairs and pulled it off himself, while pulling the chair out and then jumped on the chair and got everything off the table...
It’s the last thing we expected to happen 😢😭 very sad & heartbreaking 💔💔he was such a sweet boy and we just wanted to watch him grow up and maybe meet our children one day but that’s all taken from us now.”
Puppies can be very precocious. Braxton was very clever, and, sadly, we can’t always know ahead of time on what a pup might do to get in trouble. Please share to help spread awareness. Visit our website to learn more information on how to prevent pet suffocation. Thank you!
