Abuse is all about power and control, and emotional abuse is often used by abusers to gain power and control over their victim. In fact, it’s so common that nearly half of all men and women experience emotional/psychological abuse from an intimate partner. Would you know the signs of emotional/psychological abuse?

Thursday is National Wear Purple Day for Domestic Violence Awareness. It is the day we wear purple to show support for survivors, raise awareness, and honor those affected by domestic violence.

Domestic violence can affect anyone — regardless of age, gender, race, or background. By wearing purple, we're standing in solidarity, breaking the silence, and spreading a message of hope, healing, and change.

Let’s continue to educate, advocate, and work toward a world free from violence.

Intimate partner violence can occur in many different forms. Abuse often follows an escalating pattern in which the controlling behaviors worsen over time.

Technology abuse includes the use of technology to control and stalk a partner. Examples of technology abuse include sending threatening messages, tracking someone's whereabouts, or sharing explicit images of someone. Demanding your partner's passwords or constantly checking their phone log, are additional forms of technology abuse.

Safety is not just the absence of violence. It is the presence of freedom, dignity, connection, and hope.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is also about honoring those who are surviving, those who are healing, those who have found their freedom, and those who are still trying to imagine what life on the other side might look like.

Domestic violence awareness is about recognizing abuse—but it is also about recognizing what every survivor deserves on the other side of it.

Safety. Peace. Choice. Freedom. Support. Healing. Confidence. Hope.

Survivors deserve more than simply surviving. They deserve the opportunity to sleep peacefully, feel safe in their own home, make their own decisions, reconnect with the people they love, trust themselves again, and build a life that belongs to them.

Survival is part of the story. So is living.

Domestic violence is often thought about in terms of physical violence, but controlling behavior and other abusive tactics often begin long before any physical violence occurs. As a society we all have a role in changing the narrative about what domestic violence is, to whom it happens, and how we can support those who are experiencing it, and ultimately prevent it entirely.

If you are interested in becoming a trained volunteer or would like someone to come speak to your organization about the service we provide and how you can help make a change, please call Fulton-Mason Crisis Service:

The quote "don't ask the victim why they stay, ask the abuser why they hurt them" redirects attention to the abuser's motivations, which typically involve sustaining power and control through coercive measures. In abusive contexts, people commonly ask why a victim doesn't leave, but this disregards the complex reasons someone might feel trapped and neglects the perpetrator's responsibility.
