February marks Black History Month, a time to reflect on the profound contributions of Black Americans to our nation's history, culture, and progress. Figures such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks have played pivotal roles in shaping the United States. Their legacies inspire us to uphold the values of freedom, courage, and determination.

This month, we encourage everyone to explore the rich tapestry of our shared history and recognize the achievements that continue to influence our society today.

Candy Siglow has been a dedicated member of Family and Community Services (FCS) for 16 years, with the last 9 years spent in her current program after FCS acquired Emerald Transportation, where she was originally employed.

Candy's favorite aspect of her job is the people she works with, whom she describes as awesome. While she doesn't see any major challenges in her role, she acknowledges that there are always some smaller ones to navigate.

One of the most gratifying parts of Candy's work is receiving daily thanks from those she helps, a sentiment that underscores the positive impact she has on others.

On a personal note, Candy has two daughters, three grandchildren, and two Harley Davidson motorcycles. She expresses gratitude for her job at FCS and the privilege of working with the AmeriCorps senior staff every day.

Candy's colleagues have high praise for her. They describe her as very helpful and patient, always willing to assist others and a wealth of knowledge and resources. She is considered the absolute backbone of what they do, helping to keep everyone organized and operations running smoothly. Candy's commitment to keeping everyone happy and her readiness to answer questions make her an invaluable team member.

Meet our Team!
Pat Blubaugh Senior Companion Program Director, Stark and Summit Counties Family and Community Services

Pat Blubaugh serves as the Senior Companion Program Director for Stark and Summit Counties at Family and Community Services. She began her journey with the organization as a Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) volunteer for two and a half years before transitioning to the role of Senior Companions Stark Coordinator. On March 12th, Pat will celebrate her fifth anniversary with the organization.

Pat's pathway to Family and Community Services was initiated by her time as an FGP volunteer, where she discovered a passion for serving her community. When asked about her favorite aspect of her job, Pat enthusiastically shares, "Meeting the people, volunteers, and clients." She finds immense gratification in hearing volunteers express how much they benefit from helping others. However, Pat faces the ongoing challenge of balancing the number of volunteers with the needs of clients. Ensuring there are enough volunteers to meet the demand and enough clients to engage the volunteers remains a delicate task.

Pat is divorced and has three children, 30 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Her little Carkie, Grace (a mix of Cairn Terrier and Yorkie), keeps her on her toes. In her spare time, Pat enjoys knitting blankets for her great-grandchildren.

Although she misses working with children as an FGP volunteer, she continues to serve in her church's Kids Ministry. Pat works part-time and loves the flexibility it offers. Her colleagues describe her as very detailed and organized, excellent with paperwork, and caring, kind, and outgoing. She is well-acquainted with her community and volunteers, always asks insightful questions, and is a reliable go-to person within Stark County. Her coworkers appreciate her partnership and the efficiency and effectiveness they achieve by working together.

Fran Comstock
Foster Grandparent Coordinator,
Mahoning Valley and Geauga County

Fran Comstock has been a valued member of Family and Community Services (FCS) for 12 years, working as the Program Coordinator for the Foster Grandparents program in Geauga County and the Mahoning Valley. Recruited by another employee, Fran's commitment and dedication to her role have made her an integral part of the team.

Fran's favorite aspect of her job is her connection with the volunteers, co-workers, and the flexibility her schedule allows. However, she identifies recruitment as her biggest challenge, a common issue in volunteer-based programs.

Meet our Team!

**Anita Luttrell**

**Staff Member, Family and Community Services (FCS)**

Anita Luttrell has been an integral part of Family and Community Services (FCS) for four years. When asked what brought her to FCS, she says, "I was looking for something to keep me busy," and she certainly found that in her role.

Anita's favorite thing about her job is helping everyone with tasks they can't get to and learning new things along the way. One of her biggest challenges has been learning some of the information in the computer, but she approaches this with determination and a positive attitude.

A particularly gratifying moment for Anita is when she completes a job assigned by Candy and sees the funny look on Candy's face when she lets her know it's done. It's these small victories that make her feel appreciated and valued.

Outside of work, Anita enjoys reading, collecting teddy bears, watching movies, and crocheting. She likes to walk when she can and loves the camaraderie she shares with the wonderful ladies in the office. Although she no longer has pets, she cherishes the memories of riding motorcycles and would love to do so again.

Anita's coworkers describe her as always willing to help and incredibly patient. She is warm, welcoming, and has a bright, sweet demeanor that lights up the office. Known for her endless flirtatious charm, especially when it comes to the man in the kilt across the hall, Anita brings a unique and joyful presence to the team. Her dedication and eagerness to assist with tasks make her an invaluable member of FCS.

Meet our Team!

**Macy Martin**
Foster Grandparent Coordinator,
Portage & Stark Counties

Macy Martin joined Family & Community Services (FCS) in late June 2022 as the Foster Grandparent Coordinator. Her journey to FCS began during a college class where she had to apply for numerous jobs. After securing an interview, she was offered the position, marking the start of her first full-time professional role.

Macy's favorite aspect of working at FCS is the organization's commitment to helping people. She has always known she wanted to assist others and loves that FCS provides support at various stages of life through a wide range of programs. Macy is particularly passionate about the Foster Grandparent Program, which places volunteers in school settings to help students with their specific needs. She believes having a grandparent figure at school is invaluable and enjoys seeing the positive impact on the children.

One of Macy's biggest challenges is recruiting volunteers for the program. Despite her efforts, some people misunderstand the nature of the program, thinking it involves fostering children. Additionally, finding volunteers who meet the income guidelines can be difficult.

A memorable moment for Macy was when her volunteer, Clyde Adams, was recognized as a "Friend of Education" in the Ravenna School District at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Macy attended the ceremony and was deeply moved by the standing ovation Clyde received. Witnessing Clyde, who is 95 years old and still serving, brought tears to many eyes and was a true celebration of dedication and service. Macy proudly shared the speech given by Clyde's teacher with her family, finding Clyde's commitment inspirational.

Macy is proud to have graduated from Kent State Stark University in May 2022 with a Bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies, concentrating in Family Life Education.

On a personal note, Macy has three siblings—an older brother, a younger sister, and a younger brother. She has lived in the same town all her life and recently moved in with her boyfriend of nearly 7.5 years. She enjoys watching TV, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Macy also shares her home with a cat, a dog, and her mother's 12 chickens, which have brought unexpected joy and laughter to their lives.

Her coworkers describe Macy as cute, fun to work with, energetic, creative, and always willing to help out. They praise her excellent energy, super caring and friendly nature, tireless dedication, and tremendous love and compassion for her volunteers. Macy's positive attitude and commitment to her role make her a valued member of the FCS team.

**Linda Pylican: Data Coordinator for AmeriCorps Seniors Programs at Family and Community Services (FCS)**

Linda Pylican has been a dedicated member of the Family and Community Services (FCS) team for seven years, serving as the Data Coordinator for the AmeriCorps Seniors Programs. Reflecting on her journey to FCS, Linda shares, "They were the first one to offer me a job after almost a year and a half of applying, after we moved to Ohio." This opportunity marked the beginning of her impactful career with FCS.

Linda's favorite aspect of working at FCS is her coworkers. She describes them as "very talented, compassionate, and gifted people wanting to serve!" However, even the best teams have their challenges. For Linda, the biggest challenge is "getting paperwork on time and complete from said amazing coworkers! lol!" Despite this, she finds immense gratification in comparing yearly data and witnessing the positive changes and expansions that reflect everyone's hard work.

On a personal note, Linda has recently welcomed three new "spitfire" kittens into her home. She has a passion for gardening, raising vegetables, herbs, and flowers, and she loves being in nature, especially around water.

Her coworkers have high praise for Linda, highlighting her as very detail-oriented and wonderful to work with. They consider her a true asset to the team, a whiz with data and reports, and someone with a great eye for details. They also appreciate her readiness to listen and offer honest feedback, describing her as conscientious, creative, and motivated.

Linda's dedication, attention to detail, and supportive nature make her an invaluable member of the FCS team and a cherished colleague.
