About The Chapter:
The SUNY Canton ASCE Student Chapter provides opportunities for academic, social, and educational development through participation in regional and national competition, fundraising efforts, and volunteer work. Members apply the skills and knowledge learned in their degree programs towards “real life” design problems. As part of the competitions, members practice structural desi
gn/analysis and project management, as well as learning fabrication techniques and gaining appreciation for the strength and constructability of steel. Members gain valuable experience in time management, teamwork, responsibility, and accountability from participation in organization activities. About the Steel Bridge Team:
SUNY Canton participates in the ASCE/AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC). This competition is a student-driven project experience from conception and design, through fabrication, er****on, and testing, culminating in a steel structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy. Students design and fabricate a 1/10th scale steel bridge capable of supporting over 2,500 lbs. Teams are scored based on aesthetics, lightness, strength, and construction speed. SUNY Canton competes in the annual Upstate New York regional conference against universities such as SUNY Buffalo, RIT, Cornell, and RPI. Teams that qualify for the National Student Steel Bridge Competition face off against some of the top universities in North America. The SSBC increases awareness of real-world engineering issues such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, serviceability, fabrication and er****on processes, safety, aesthetics, and cost.
