Last week we visited Children & Youth Services in Washington County to discuss how we can best support each other. CYS has some remarkably dedicated caseworkers and supervisors and I’m thankful for the invaluable work they do in our community. ⭐️

In the court of law, the suggestion to engage in couples therapy is often presented as a viable solution to address domestic related crimes. Sounds like sound advice, right? Wrong. This approach can, in fact, be detrimental to the victim and perpetuate the cycle of abuse. Domestic violence is not a mental health issue, but rather a power and control issue that the offender must take responsibility for changing. Couples counseling may be beneficial for marital problems, but this is not a marital problem, it is a criminal act. The DOC has a program specific for DV cases lead by trained professionals in the field.
