Brutus and Butterscotch!
Every day Butterscotch seems to be getting stronger. He is eating enough on his own that he is gaining weight. But he is still on daily fluids and a lot of other meds. We are happy with baby steps.

Special thank you to Dr Wells and Dr Ryker at Pleasant Valley for getting Hank in so quickly and taking care of him. Hank even had an ultrasound. Hank is coming home to be an indoor kitty now. We want to see if fluids perk him up from this heat wave, but he has some bigger issues too that we will address and we know our time is limited.
One thing about our rescue... If Malcolm's Magic Community Cat Alliance traps a cat, we will always be there for that cat when it needs us, no matter how many years later. That is why we microchip every cat, including every feral we trap. When you support Malcolm's Magic, you are helping us to help cats like Hank.

Please pray for Hank... he is a senior kitty and not doing well. Malcolm's Magic trapped him in 2020 for a caretaker. Hank was an older kitty then, but very feral. He had two devoted caretakers who provided him with the best food and very warm heated shelters and medical care when needed. He is very loved and known to the neighborhood. This recent heat wave may have taken a toll on Hank. His caretakers have been trying to trap him for weeks with no luck. While he did start to let them pet him, they couldn't get him in a trap. We finally got him with a set over trap and he is on his way to Pleasant Valley. Please send prayers and positive energy for Hank. We are asking God to comfort Hank and help him understand that the doctors and vet professionals at Pleasant Valley are trying to help him, and that God calms Hank so he is not afraid.
Our hearts are breaking for him right now. We want him to feel better 😭

To everyone who donated, I will be reaching out to personally say thank you. I have been so focused on Butterscotch, things have been getting behind. Just know how much I appreciate all of you.
You helped save Butterscotch and helped to give him a chance at a real, happy home, where he will get the vet care he needs.
The really sad part is he was outside people's homes for months. Nobody took him in, nobody bothered to get him basic vet care. So he struggled outside, getting the crap beat out of him by other cats, getting stressed and sicker by the minute until he was literally on death's door. I could have never imagined the complications he would face. All of which would have been prevented with basic care, like flea treatment. He ended up needing a transfusion from the mycoplasma...transmitted by fleas. He needed simple flea treatment, for gosh sake.
Tomorrow he goes for a recheck bloodwork. He has been doing so well, but I am afraid to get my hopes up.
So I will remain cautiously optimistic, but forever grateful to you all for donating to save him. We could not have done this without you.
PS, he went from 7.9 pounds to 8.3 this week. Totally eating on his own. ♡♡

Wednesday, June 10 Butterscotch (formerly fallon) update
These are the kinds of updates I love to give. 4 am this morning he jumped back up on the sink while Roger was getting food ready. Mr. Impatient! I watched him eat, bc I had to start his morning meds, phosphorus binder, cerenia injection, sub q fluids, etc. He gets his next round of meds at 7 am.
You all made this possible. Dr Quimby said they do not know the extent of the damage from the antibiotic resistant enterococcus infection in his kidneys, but the fact that he us so eager to eat and eating on his own is a great sign. He goes back to see Dr Wells and get more bloodwork tomorrow. Unfortunately, a side effect of the linezolid, the super antibiotic we are trying to use for his kidneys is bone marrow supression, and with his prior anemia from the mycoplasma, we have to monitor that along with his kidney values. Thank you again for your donations. Because of you, Butterscotch has a chance. ♡♡

So here'sa better, happy Butterscotch update! He ate very well again today. Breakfast, then 2 hours later a meal with antibiotics, then dinner, and two hours later another meal with antibiotics. Roger took over some medications while I was in the office. I rearranged the sub q fluids and his antibiotics so he got them right before I left amd when I just got home at 7:45. I was worried thinking he would miss me and be sad I was gone.
But Roger sent me photos to show that Butterscotch was hanging with him, trying to steal his lunch, and they even napped together with 18 year old Booboo.
These are all positive moves in the correct direction, and I am jealous, lol. His next appt and recheck bloodwork are on Thursday. We are praying that his kidneys are kicking back in. Thank you all for the support you have shown for this sweet boy over the past month. He is truly a miracle that we all needed. ♡♡♡

Butterscotch update!
Never a dull moment in rescue! Who would have thought Butterscotch would generate drama?
As you know, PVSEC contacted us on May 7 in the evening to see if we would take in an orange tabby with a urinary blockage that had been surrendered. He would have been euthanized otherwise. We agreed, and within 14 hours at PVSEC, we spent $2400 to have him unnlocked. The following day we transferred him to Cheat Lake, where he spent 4.5 days, and we paid $2600. I brought him home for three days, during which he had two visits to our regular vet bc he was showing signs of complications. I then took him back to Cheat Lake bc he was in renal failure. He was there from May 15 to 21, for a total of $4,000. During this time, my friends donated approximately $10,000 to specifically save Butterscotch. On May 21, I took him to Ohio State, where he spent another week. I personally donated $5,500 to pay off his bill. The resident stated he would likely not survive discharge, but he did. He was home only a couple of days and was not eating. His kidneys were not recovering. At that point, I made the decision that he would not die without having a real forever home, and that he would stay with us. After all he was going to require 4 weeks of doxy treatment for mycoplasma and 6 weeks of a super powerful restricted antibiotic to treat the antibiotic resistant enterococcus infection that was destroying his kidneys, if he survived.
Despite all of this going on, we were recently contacted by friends who came across a horrible cat situation. We loaned them traps and gave other supplies and set up a fundraiser to get the cats and kittens out of the hell they were in. We immediately got a momma cat into a full service vet for complete vetting, a cost of $450, which I personally paid. One kitten went to a full service vet for severe upper respiratory. We set up the fundraiser for the dumpster colony project bc our rescue's funds were depleted. In addition to Butterscotch, we also had multiple other huge vet bills.
Well, in steps Londyn Madison. She is a so called "rescuer" who is bad news on every level. Even the local humane officer posted warnings about her. She does not like that we decided to keep Butterscotch...a medically compromosed cat, still fighting for his life. Apparently she thinks we should either adopt him out, or I should personally pay into the rescue or refund the $10K people donated for his vet bills, because he was now my "personal pet." She is psycho, no doubt. But she feels that by me keeping him in order to ensure his next 6 weeks of treatment (that may not work, which will result in his death), and to make sure he gets any future care he needs, that I somehow used donations for my "personal pet". As if I set out to find a severely sick and dying stray with severe medical issues to make my personal pet. I cannot make this crap up. This is the type of bull$hit reputable rescues deal with on a daily basis.
I guess I should have been "ethical" and placed a medically compromised cat in kidney failure, who also has mycoplasma and chronic cystitis up for adoption! There's a long line of qualified adopters for those cats, right? Good Lord.
Anyhow, I want to share her comments here. Ask any local reputable rescue what they think of Londyn Madison. Or just search her name on Facebook. There are plenty of posts about her.
And if anyone wants to donate to help our rescue tackle the dumpster project cats, our PayPal is [email protected] our venmo is MMAGICCCA and checks can be mailed to Malcolm's Magic PO Box 282 Canonsburg Pa 15317. We set up a camera to monitor and count cats and kittens remaining. So far 6 trapped thanks to Lori and Dan, but we cannot get the rest without funds to cover the vetting.
Thank you for helping us help them!

PS Londyn....put down the crack pipe.

This momma from the restaurant colony was spayed today at Steel Vet. They got her in quickly. She is also getting vaccinated, flea treated, combo tested, and chipped. They said her milk was drying up, so she may be the mom to the kittens in this photo, or there may be another litter there. At least she will not be having another litter this fall.
This area is a disaster and the cats need fixed. If anyone wants to TNR there, I can give you the exact location. We do not have funds for this project. We will not be doing additional trapping there unless we raise funds.
Message me if you are able to take on this project.
Thank you!

After a long morning of bird and chipmunk duty, Simon, Brutus, and Butterscotch are having a well deserved nap.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check on Butterscotch. It means a lot that people continue to pray for this sweet boy and really care about his well-being. On a positive note, he did get up and ate well with the rest of the gang this morning. It is the best he has eaten since coming home. We are going to hold off on repeating his bloodwork for now. I don't want to stress him taking him back to the vet so soon, and he is doing better....so we will hold off for now. It really is a day by day, sometimes hour by hour situation. One of the most stressful I have gone through in years. I just pray he continues to have progress.

Butterscotch Wednesday evening update.
Mr. B had a good day. After his cerenia shot kicked in, he ended up eating some on his own this morning. He took a nap, got up to watch birds, and ate a decent amount on his own tonight. He was up and about exploring the house, making friends, and being a good boy.
I went through his med list again, and the side effect for virtually all meds was nausea, vomiting, and D+. So I am still cautiously optimistic that his kidneys will start functioning better and it is the meds making him nauseated. Although he clearly will not get back to 100%, I will be so happy if it is enough for him to have good quality of life.
Look at Sugar Cookie...he only has one functioning kidney but he has a great life. So I am hoping the same for Butterscotch. But as Dr Q said, it is going to be a long road. Thank you to everyone who is walking this road with us. We appreciate you all so much. ♡♡ Friends who care make all journeys so much easier. ♡♡

Thank you to the Hollywood Casino and Racetrack at the Meadows for including Malcolm's Magic Community Cat Alliance in your fundraising! We appreciate it so much! When businesses and rescues partner together, so many cats and kittens can be saved, (like our recent racetrack kitten, Magic!) and colonies kept under control.
If you are looking for a fun night out, the casino at the Meadows is the place! What could be better, a night out supporting local business...a local business that supports local rescues! It's a win-win!
