We want to address a difficult situation involving three of our 6th-grade Lil Mac football players, while remaining respectful of the SHYFL league, its member communities, and everyone involved.
In April, SHYFL voted 7–0 to remove the maximum weight requirement for the 6th-grade division. Our families and coaches moved forward based on that decision. These players registered, prepared, purchased the required equipment, completed heat acclimatization, attended practices, and worked alongside their teammates to prepare for the 2026 season.
On August 16, the league held its required weigh-in. Following those results, the issue of the 6th-grade weight was brought back for review. Approximately five days before the start of the season, a change was made that resulted in three of our players being sidelined.
We respectfully disagree with that decision.
Our concern is not about attacking anyone, creating conflict, or asking for special treatment for Lil Mac Football. It is about fairness and the process that was followed.
The SHYFL rule states that maximum weights are "subject to review." We believe there is an important difference between reviewing a rule and changing an already-approved eligibility requirement after families and athletes have spent months preparing under that rule.
Most importantly, these boys did nothing wrong.
They followed the rules that were in place. They practiced. They completed the required preseason requirements. They prepared with their teammates. Their families invested time, money and commitment into the season.
They should not be the ones paying the price for a rule that was changed after the fact.
We also want to be clear that we are not accusing anyone of intentionally targeting Lil Mac Football. We cannot speak to anyone's intentions. But the result is that three Lil Mac players are being prevented from doing something they have worked hard to do all offseason play football with their friends and teammates.
Our position is simple:
Let these boys play.
If SHYFL believes a 6th-grade maximum weight should be established, we respect the league's right to discuss that issue and follow the appropriate process. But any new restriction should be applied fairly and going forward, rather than being used to remove children who were eligible under the rules established for the 2026 season.
We hope SHYFL will reconsider this decision and do what is right for these three young athletes.
This isn't about winning an argument.
It's about doing right by the kids.
