🐾 Whisker Wednesday Feline Fun Fact 🐾

For the first few weeks of life, kittens can’t potty on their own at all! Their mama has to stimulate them after every meal to help them go. It’s just one of the many important jobs mom cats handle while raising their babies.

As kittens grow, they begin watching and learning from their mom. Around 3-4 weeks of age, many kittens start exploring the litter box, and before long they’re copying everything they see mom do. It turns out that potty training is often a lesson taught by observation!

Judging by this photo, Garfield’s little students are taking their Potty Training 101 class very seriously. 😹

🚗🐾 Transport Team Adventures… Featuring Hoppy, Professional Escape Artist 🐾🚗

People often think our transport team members simply load cats into carriers and drive them to their destination.

The cats sometimes view this as just a suggestion rather than an actual plan. 😹

For instance, this morning, Hoppy and a couple furry friends were headed to Cat Care Society to begin their journey toward forever homes.

Everything was going smoothly until Sue noticed her low tire pressure light come on before reaching Colorado Springs.

Being the responsible transporter she is, Sue stopped at Heuberger Subaru to have it checked out before getting on I-25. The wonderful staff aired up the tire and checked the sensors.

Problem solved, right?

Not quite. 🥴

Sue got back into her vehicle only to discover that Hoppy's carrier door had somehow fallen off... and Hoppy was no longer inside the carrier. 😳

Now, for those who know Hoppy, this won't come as a complete surprise. Our team has previously had to retrieve him from behind sink pipes... twice. Apparently, if there's a difficult place to hide, Hoppy considers it a personal challenge. He absolutely LOVES playing Hide & Seek.

The amazing team at Hueberger Subaru immediately shut the service bay doors while a search party was launched. Fortunately, Hoppy was located safe and sound under the front seat, apparently conducting his own inspection of the vehicle and evaluating Subaru's safety standards.

The Subaru staff found zip ties so the carrier door could be secured for the remainder of the trip.

But because Hoppy clearly believed he was directing today's adventure, his carrier was loaded with the door facing backward "just in case."

Funny enough, when Cat Care Society opened the carrier to unload him... the door fell off again. 🤦‍♀️

Hoppy arrived safely. Sue survived. The Subaru staff earned some rescue karma points. The carrier, however, has officially been relieved of its duties.

Moral of the story: Never underestimate a determined cat. Especially one named Hoppy.

Have a wonderful life, little buddy. We can't wait to hear about the adventures your forever family will undoubtedly have with you. ❤️

🎉 Sunday Success Update 🎉

What a difference a day makes!

We’re thrilled to announce that ALL NINE kittens from yesterday’s Penrose TNR mission were safely retrieved and made their way to foster mom Amy and family last night. Some of the final captures happened by headlamp well after dark, but our dedicated team wasn’t giving up until every kitten was safe.

And there’s more good news!

While working the property, we discovered that both mama cats appear friendly enough to have a chance at indoor life. Cloud was trapped last night and settled in beautifully at our shelter and Storm was just caught moments ago and is joining Cloud this very minute.

Both will be spayed soon and, for the first time in a long time, can focus on being loved instead of raising litter after litter. We’ll spend time helping them adjust to indoor life at Molly’s Place, and if all goes well, they’ll be looking for forever homes of their own soon!

But let’s be honest… the kittens may have stolen the show… just look at these ADORABLE faces!

We have six boys: Cedar, Hickory, Mesquite, Walnut, Redwood, & Blackwood and three girls: Sassafras, Acacia, & Camphor. Amy, Craig, & River are already seeing progress with their socialization and little Mesquite’s eye looks so much better today, he had a piece of grass in it. The snuggle pics are of their current nap fest.

Thank you to everyone who supports our TNR efforts. This is exactly why TNR matters: fewer kittens born outdoors, healthier cats, and brighter futures for entire feline families. 🫶🏼

Our TNR team is back at it today! This is our second trip to a property in Penrose, and with much better weather than our rainy first visit, we’re making great progress.

Our goal today is to safely trap as many kittens as we can so they can begin socialization while they’re still young, while also making plans to TNR the adult cats on the property.

So far, we’ve secured five of the roughly 7-10 kittens. Once everyone is safely rounded up, they'll head to Amy's famous "feral boot camp" to begin their journey toward brighter futures.

Send our team some good vibes by hitting that 💗 button and wishing us luck on the last babies!

🎉 Happy Fri-YAY! A TNR Success Story 🎉

Sometimes rescue work doesn't happen in a day... or even a week.

Back in May, our team was contacted about a colony of cats living beneath a mobile home on a large property west of Cañon City. The property owners, who are animal lovers themselves, wanted to make sure the cats had the best possible chance at a safe and healthy future.

Our TNR Director, Marcia, and Robin visited the property to assess the situation. Cameras were set up, countless hours were spent monitoring activity, and little by little we discovered the habits of a friendly mama cat, five additional adult cats, and nearly a dozen kittens.

Then came our first surprise.

During an early trapping effort, we successfully trapped seven kittens much sooner than expected. They quickly headed to Amy and her family's "feral boot camp," where their experience and patience worked wonders. Within just 10 days, the kittens were social enough to move on to one of our rescue partners. Naturally, they became known as the Surprise! Kittens.

Over the following weeks, our team made multiple trips back to the property, spent hours reviewing camera footage, strategizing trapping plans, and working to help the remaining cats.

This past Tuesday, that determination paid off!

After spending the entire day trapping, waiting, hoping, and sometimes holding our breath, we successfully trapped Fawn, a friendly mama cat, two adult males, two adult females, and four additional kittens.

The four adults were spayed/neutered Wednesday at Fremont Veterinary Hospital and safely returned to the property today. We still have one trap-savvy female left to help and hope to snag her late next week.

Added bonus: the property owners have a new tenant moving into the mobile home, a cat lover who has agreed to continue feeding and caring for the five adult cats who are simply too spicy to become indoor companions. ❤️

Meanwhile, Fawn and four kittens are settling into Amy's care, where they'll begin their journey toward indoor lives and future homes.

In total, our team has easily invested more than 40 hours helping this little family.

While we always wish every cat could find a home, rescue isn't always that simple. Sometimes success means a warm couch and a forever family. Sometimes success means a safe caretaker, regular meals, and never having to raise another litter outdoors.

Because of this effort, young kittens will have the opportunity to live indoor lives, and the adult cats will never again face the challenges of bringing more babies into the world outside.

That is a win worth celebrating!

Thank you to Marcia, Robin, Naz, Marolynne, Susie, Amy, Craig, River, our TNR cat care team, the property owners, and Fremont Veterinary Hospital for helping make this outcome possible.

Happy Fri-YAY indeed! 🎉

🐾 A Huge Thank You to Our Incredible Team 🐾

Since the beginning of 2026, more than 200 cats and kittens have come into JJ’s Helping Paws’ care through our Molly’s Place shelter and foster homes.

That’s 200 lives touched. 200 stories changed. 200 chances for a brighter future.

While many see the impact our rescue makes, they don't always see the tremendous amount happening behind the scenes to make outcomes possible.

There are phone calls, emails, intake assessments, scheduling, coordination with veterinary and surgical teams, grant writing, social media updates, website maintenance, voucher sales, clinic planning, record keeping, rescue partner relationships, transportation, and countless details that must come together every single day.

Our TNR volunteers spend countless hours trapping community cats.

Our fosters open their homes and hearts to cats who need extra care and socialization.

Our transport team chauffeurs cats to appointments, clinics and adoption partners.

Our voucher and clinic teams dedicate two Saturdays every month helping families access affordable spay and neuter services and they coordinate clinics.

The care crew at Molly’s Place provides daily care, cleaning, feeding, medication, and love.

Our administrative volunteers keep everything organized and moving forward.

Our maintenance and grounds volunteers keep our facilities safe, functional, and welcoming.

Rescue doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It takes a village.

To every volunteer, foster, trapper, transporter, caregiver, clinic helper, coordinator, and behind-the-scenes problem solver - thank you!! Your dedication makes all of this possible.

If our team has helped you, your family, or a cat in need, we’d love to hear about it. Feel free to leave a comment and share your experience.

Our team does so much behind the scenes and we’d love to celebrate them today! 🫶🏼

🐾 Whisker Wednesday Feline Fun Fact 🐾

Did you know kittens are born without any teeth?

Their tiny baby teeth, often called “milk teeth,” begin appearing at around 2-4 weeks of age. By the time they’re about 6 months old, those baby teeth fall out and are replaced by 30 permanent adult teeth!

If you’ve ever found a tiny kitten tooth on the floor, consider yourself lucky - most kittens swallow their baby teeth while eating, and it doesn’t harm them at all.

When Snuggles first arrived, this handsome 2-year-old long-haired boy was frightened and unsure of the world around him. What he needed most wasn't a shelter or a cage - he needed time, patience, and the one-on-one attention that only a foster home can provide.

Look at him now. 🥹

His true personality has emerged, and he's become a loving, affectionate companion who can't get enough of his foster mom.

And while we can't scientifically prove it, we firmly believe that speaking to cats in an sweet, high-pitched baby voice helps them come out of their shells faster. We're kidding... but also not kidding. 😹

This is the magic of fostering. A little love, a little patience, and a safe place to land can change a life forever.

🐾 Happy Friday-YAY from Bean! 🐾

Today, our beloved Office Manager packed his bags once again and headed off on a brand new adventure with Auntie Deb.

Bean is already settling in nicely, and we hear the two of them are enjoying some very extensive chats together. Auntie Deb says she is so thankful to have our sweet boy keeping her company.

Fostering is such a life-changing experience - not just for the cats, but for the humans who open their hearts and homes to them, too. Seeing Bean so loved and spoiled during his little getaways has brought so much joy to all of us.

Enjoy your newest adventure, Bean… you’ve definitely earned it! ❤️
