Even though it’s Labor Day weekend, our Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Voucher Team WILL be at Tractor Supply tomorrow, Saturday, September 5, from 10 AM–12 noon!

If getting your cat or dog spayed or neutered has been on your to-do list, come see us and get that box checked. ✅

🎒 Back to Basics - Lesson #4: Ear Tips 101

Remember last week when we told you to notice that “little something” TNR cats receive? 👀

Today we’re talking EAR TIPS!

If you see an outdoor kitty with the tip of their left ear cleanly removed, chances are they’ve already been through TNR.

Ear tipping is done while the cat is safely under anesthesia for their spay or neuter, and therefore, they feel nothing. Once healed, it provides a permanent, easy-to-see way for trappers and caretakers to know:

🐾 I’ve been spayed or neutered.
🐾 I’ve already been through TNR.
🐾 Focus your efforts on the kitties who still need you!

Without that little identifier, a community cat could be trapped and transported again or worse, anesthetized, before anyone realizes they’ve already been fixed.

Look at all these gorgeous babies sporting ear tips… don’t feel sorry that they have them - celebrate!

It means one more kitty who won’t be making kittens and one more step toward a healthier community cat population.

🎓 Extra credit: Now that you know what to look for, see if you can spot an ear tip the next time you see a community kitty!

🐾 Monday Mood: Soooo Close… 😩

This is Paula. 🐄

Paula was rescued by a kind person who realized she was friendly and had likely been someone’s indoor kitty at one time. After keeping her safe and trying to figure out where she belonged, they reached out for help and Paula eventually made her way to JJ’s.

And wouldn’t you know it - she came into our care the exact same day we shared Wild Blue Cats’ incredible story about a microchip reuniting a kitty with his family SIX YEARS after he went missing.

One of the first things we do when a cat comes into our care is scan for a microchip.

Beep, beep… Paula had one! 🎉

We were thrilled. Surely we were about to reunite another kitty with her family.

Except… Paula’s microchip was never registered. 💔

No phone number. No address. No way to know who she belongs to.

We’ve searched lost-pet reports going back to early 2026, and the person who rescued her shared that Paula began appearing in the neighborhood shortly after a neighbor moved away. No one remembers seeing her outside before then.

Paula is now on hold with a foster while we continue trying to locate her family. If no one comes forward, her story will take a new turn.

And she gives us the perfect Monday reminder:

PLEASE check your pets’ microchips.

🐾 Make sure the chip is registered.
🐾 Make sure your phone number and address are current.
🐾 Add an alternate contact if you can.

Registering your pet’s microchip information is FREE. If you aren’t sure which company the chip belongs to, the American Animal Hospital Association has a universal microchip lookup tool that can point you in the right direction.

Paula was chipped. She was SO close.

Don’t let an unregistered or outdated microchip be the reason your pet can’t find their way back to you. 💝

🐾 Thursday Thoughts From Ballou 🐾

This month, Ballou would like to clear up a little misunderstanding:

“FIV+ doesn’t mean I can’t have friends. It just means I’m positive… and VERY cuddly.”

Exhibit A: Ballou and his girl Minerva, demonstrating proper couch-snuggling technique.

FIV can sound scary, but cats like Ballou are wonderful reminders that a positive test doesn’t define the life ahead of them. FIV+ cats can live happy, comfortable lives - complete with soft beds, sunny windows, ridiculous sleeping positions, humans wrapped around their paws…and yes, feline friends.

FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, which is why friendly cats who live peacefully together can often safely share a home, regardless of FIV status.

And judging by this picture, we’re pretty sure Minerva isn’t particularly concerned about Ballou’s medical chart. She just knows they make excellent pillow for each other. 😂

Maybe Ballou’s Thursday Thought is one we humans could use, too:

Don’t judge someone by a label. Get to know the heart underneath it.

And in Ballou’s case, you don’t have to look very far for the heart. It’s right there on his nose. ❤️

🎒 Back to Basics - Lesson #3: TNR 101

Class is back in session! 📚 Today we’re tackling three little letters that make a BIG difference for community cats: T-N-R.

🐾 TRAP - Community cats are humanely trapped so they can safely receive veterinary care.

🐾 NEUTER - Each cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated as appropriate, and given a little something that lets everyone know they’ve already been fixed. More on that in a minute.

🐾 RETURN - After recovering, cats are returned back to the outdoor home and territory they already know.

And that last step is important. TNR isn’t about trapping community cats and simply moving them somewhere else. By returning altered cats to their established territory, they can continue living in the place they know and be cared for by the people they know - they just can’t make more kittens.

Spaying and neutering also helps reduce many of the behaviors associated with mating, including roaming, fighting, yowling and spraying.

Over time, TNR helps stabilize and gradually reduce community cat populations by stopping the cycle where it begins: reproduction.

Now, about that “little something” we mentioned…

If you look closely at most TNR cats, you might notice the tip of one ear looks a little different.

What an incredible reminder of why microchipping matters. 🥹

Six years. Thousands of miles. And one tiny microchip that never forgot where Ozzie belonged.

We’re so happy for Ozzie, Joe, and our friends at Wild Blue Cats for this truly unbelievable reunion. Stories like this are exactly why we encourage every pet owner to microchip their animals AND keep that registration information current. You truly never know when it might be the one thing that brings them home.

😴 Monday Mood: Wiped Out 😴

Today, we took in TWELVE kittens. Yep. 12. In one day. 😳

Six are headed to Auntie Susie & Auntie Sherri, and six are headed to Auntie Sue, where they’ll be safe, fed, loved, socialized and given the chance at a completely different future.

We’re thankful we had somewhere for these babies to go, but days like today are also a giant reminder:

PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. SPAY AND NEUTER.

Twelve kittens means twelve mouths to feed, twelve sets of vaccines, twelve spay/neuter surgeries, twelve little lives needing foster space, supplies, medical care and eventually a path toward forever homes.

And these are just the twelve who came through our doors today.

We love them already. We’ll do everything we can for them. But the best way to help rescues like ours is to prevent the next litter before it ever happens.

Spay. Neuter. Save lives. 🫶🏼
