When brown pelicans on the west coast of North America leave their breeding colonies, they travel between Mexico and Canada to forage on fish. Despite being a large and iconic species, much remains unknown about their survival and movement during the non-breeding season.

Understanding these aspects is critical for developing effective conservation strategies to protect pelicans from threats such as fishing gear entanglements, oil spills, and climate change.

In 2022, Pelican Science partnered with Cellular Tracking Technologies (celltracktech.com) to develop a new non-invasive method for tracking pelicans using an electronic band (“eBand”).

Learn more about this work at tomorrow's talk at the Pelican Brewery in Cannon Beach. The talk begins at 4PM.

Have you heard about the Birds with Fish program? Dr. Rachael A. Orben leads the Seabird Oceanography Lab out of Oregon State University. One of the focuses is on figuring out the diet composition of Tufted Puffins in Oregon in order to have a better idea of what prey species they depend on, and if there’s any sort of linkage between their diet to their diminishing population status.

The best place to conduct this research is right in our back yard at Haystack Rock. For the past few year's Friends of Haystack Rock has helped fund the efforts of this research, along with a few other projects along the Oregon and Washington Coast regarding the rapid decline of the Tufted Puffins along the California Current.

Join us tomorrow, December 20th at the Pelican Brewery to see what we've been up to and how you might be able to help. Come on down to the Pelican Brewery and enjoy an evening with your Friends. Our presentaiton will begin at 4PM.
