Asheville Farmstead School

Asheville Farmstead School Planting Seeds of Knowledge in Fertile Minds. A non-profit, educational forest school for pre-schoolers, homeschoolers, and large groups.

Asheville Farmstead runs programs that focus on the Seasons in which they occur. The Sprouts program teaches pre-K youth about interacting with nature and other children. They create nature art, eat from the garden, water plants, explore the forest, and use their imaginations. Camp Farmstead offers summer camps that focus on weekly nature themes while campers play games, create art, prepare food f

rom the garden and generally enjoy being together outside. Students are instrumental to the success of the farm and often volunteer at the Farmer’s Markets to sell their products. We grow much more than local food at Asheville Farmstead, we also grow ourselves. Families are strongly encouraged to commit to an entire year of programming, so that they can see the complete process that the Seasons provide. We envision that many families will return year after year, and the students will build upon their previous understandings as their develop new skills and abilities. There are so many educational and extracurricular opportunities for youth in our community, but few of them offer the child-centered, year-round, nature-oriented programming that is available at Asheville Farmstead School. Too many of our youth suffer from what Richard Louv calls nature-deficit disorder, as they are glued to their screens and immersed in organized competitive activities. Asheville Farmstead offers the chance for the next generation to make connections to the food chain, to each other, and to the Earth in ways that were part of our ancestors’ daily routine. Today the values of our forefathers are cycling back to the present, and our school embraces those values by leading children on an exploration for that timeless knowledge and those not-quite-lost skills.

We’re in the midst of Water Wonders week here at Camp Farmstead, and today our campers became engineers! Using tin foil, natural materials, and plenty of creativity, they designed boats and tested whether they could float, sail, and carry weight. Through hands-on play, campers explored buoyancy, balance, problem-solving, and cause and effect. There were successful voyages, dramatic shipwrecks, and lots of fun along the way.

Our ice melt tie dye is out of this world! Between creek explorations, free play, sunny afternoons, and time spent with friends, Water Wonders week is checking all the boxes for a classic Camp Farmstead summer.

Did somebody say it’s WATER WONDERS WEEK? Oh yeah! Water Wonder week at Camp Farmstead means all the water play and ice tie dye camp shirts! Today, our campers sprinkled dye on top of ice to melt in the sunshine. We can’t wait to see how everyone’s t shirts came out! playbasedlearning

As we get into the flow of our first week of Camp Farmstead for the season, we can't help but reminisce on our school year. Our tenth year of the Farmstead brought us such wonderful memories with even more wonderful students and families. We can't thank our community enough. We still have spots, though limited, for our 2026-2027 school year! Book a tour of our campus to see what we have to offer in person. More info can be found in the link in our bio :)

That's a wrap on Camp Farmstead 2026 week one! This week's theme was Gardening and Farmstead Skills. Our campers sowed seeds, planted cuttings, prepped micro greens, made homemade beeswax wraps, spent time in our Rainbow Ridge Garden, made art using nature, connected with friends and played in the sunshine and the rain! What a fun week it's been! See you all next week for our Water Wonders week!

Camp Farmstead + warm, rainy afternoons = our ideal summer. Today, our Gardening and Farmstead Skills crew explored one of a garden’s best friends: compost. Through a hands-on sorting activity, campers worked together to decide which materials belong in recycling, the landfill, or the compost bin. They learned how food scraps and other natural materials can be transformed into nutrient-rich soil that helps gardens thrive, while also building a better understanding of how we can care for the earth. Can’t wait to see what Camp brings us tomorrow!

Is it even the first day of Camp Farmstead if we don’t water the children?! We kicked off our 11th year of Camp Farmstead yesterday with our Gardening and Farmstead Skills themed week. Our campers will learn about tomato plants, sow seeds in our garden, plant micro greens, craft wee little snails out of clay and marbles, create art using nature as the medium, and make their own beeswax wraps. We’re so thrilled to start the summer season with this crew!

Our End of Year & Growing Up Celebration this past weekend was incredibly bittersweet in the best way. Families gathered to play, connect, and celebrate. This season always brings a mix of emotion as we celebrate the children who are growing up and moving on from the Farmstead. Watching them grow into themselves has been such a gift, and while it’s hard to say goodbye, we’re so excited for all that lies ahead for them. This year, we also say “see you later” to one of our beloved staff members, Brianna, as she moves on to finish her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She's been such an integral part of the Farmstead community over the years and to say we will miss her loving, engaging energy is an understatement. We're grateful to look forward to one more summer camp season with her! We’re ending this school year feeling incredibly thankful for the children, families, and everyday moments that made it so special. Now, summer begins!
