Alexander based "Art of Breathing" suggests that to support your breathing coordination you can simply focus on your exhales through your mouth, following them to their easy conclusion, then enjoy the inhales through your nose that follow.

Try using your simple breathing coordination by taking the Kevin Bacon “Lovely Day” challenge ~ not by first “taking a deep breath” to prepare, but instead by just enjoying an exhale to its natural conclusion first… and then enjoying the inhale of fresh oxygen rushing into your lungs... and then… “Day….!”

NY Time’s Reader’s Comment about article:

“A fairly common report, after a series of lessons in the Alexander Technique, is that people notice they’ve reclaimed lost height (actually, lost length). The Technique is worth looking into for many reasons not directly related to height, but a famous blurb/quote from actor Kevin Kline about AT and the recapture of “about an inch and a half of height” has been in print for several decades now.

I’m 5’8” but at my full “Alexandrian” length, people factually taller than I am think I’m taller than they, due to the “up energy” conducted. They’re scrunching/hunching/collapsing down, and I’m going up. Strange how perceptions go! But if you think about a taller tree in some decline, and a smaller tree on its way up…”

Limb-lengthening can add inches to a person’s stature. But its risks have made it controversial.

It is so joyful to watch elite athletes using highly sophisticated spatial awareness and proprioception to break boundaries and establish new records.

What we admire about Ilia Malinin in particular is his embodied awareness of the AT "back, back and up" direction throughout his flowing motion on the ice - especially shown in his strong extension of his back leg when he lands these many remarkable quad (four rotation) elements. He has a clear sense of where he is, where he himself is moving in relation to the infinite space above, below, behind, in front, and on either side of him.

What we really admire overall though is the pleasure and joy that this movement seems to clearly give him. And through him, to us watching.

Can we start to spread the word that Alexander principles can bring greater pleasure and satisfaction, not just for elite athletics like this who intuit them, but in the daily life of all human beings no matter what their abilities or disabilities are?

From an interview with Malinin after a competition:
Interviewer: "Do you ever feel like you are up there forever?"

Ilia: "Yeah. I just take off and it feels like I'm never going to land."

The Poise Project is showing up!

Team members Graeson Harris-Young and Kimberly Peterson are at our exhibit table at the Parkinson's Study Group Annual Meeting in San Diego CA this week advocating for Alexander interventions for people living with Parkinson's and their families.

We are proud to be one of these important exhibitors supporting Parkinson's research and programming, with an emphasis on diversity and socioeconomic accessibility. And we are proud to be a new Community Partner Member of PSG!

Alexander technique continues to be validated for healthcare recommendations, due to determined efforts to a) do high-quality research on the impact of AT on target populations; and b) thoughtful and determined advocacy by some in the AT professional community to make these studies known in continuing insurance-coverage discussions.

Please know that there are a determined few committed to doing the work for the many who can benefit!

Executive Director, Monika Gross, and TPP Board Member and Peer-to-Peer Facilitator, Nina Reed, attended the Duke Caregiver Community Event and Professional Networking sessions on September 2-4, in Durham NC.

They were there to share The Poise Project's Alexander technique-based program for care partners, "Partnering with Poise". They made new connections, and strengthened some existing connections, with the one hundred nonprofit care partner area and national resource organizations, senior living communities, home aide services, and health providers who were present. They met many individual care partners and allied health professionals who were attendees, too.

They were especially pleased to connect with producers at the American Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) about potentially partnering for Alexander technique related programming!

The Duke Caregiver Community Event offers insights from experts and ways to connect with services and support systems. Find answers and resources that can help you navigate this journey.

Executive Director, Monika Gross, brought The Poise Project to the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas' Caring for Parkinson's - Caring for You Signature Symposium on Saturday, September 6 in Charlotte NC.

She introduced over 25 people living with Parkinson's and their families - as well as allied health rehabilitation specialists, home aide providers, and senior living community representatives - to the benefits of Alexander for people living with Parkinson's and their care partners.

Al, in particular, enjoyed his AT "taste" and immediately started teaching both his local Supranus pharamaceutical company rep and a local Charlotte neurologist about how to have poise while moving from sitting to standing - AND standing to sitting!

From showing up, The Poise Project was invited to train interested PTs at a clinic outside Charlotte in how to use AT principles to help support their clients during their therapy sessions! AT prompts are such a helpful additive for rehabilitation specialists to use to help their clients return to coordination and poise during their therapy sessions.

Neuroscientist Dr. Rajal G. Cohen says:

"In my professional opinion, The Poise Project has done more for the Alexander technique in terms of outreach in the last decade than all of our Alexander technique professional organizations combined. ... Also I would humbly request that you increase your annual donation to The Poise Project."
