How about making some ice cube candles?

Cut off the top of a 1 quart waxed cardboard milk or juice carton.. Pour 1 inch of melted paraffin in the bottom and place an 8 inch-taper candle (any color) in the middle. Pack ice around the candle. Pour melted paraffin into the carto until it is full. Let the wax harden overnight and tear away the mold.

As the center candle burns, drippings will trickle through holes to give an interesting affect. Make sure you place the candle on a candle plate.

Below is a link for an older video but provides a great visual for the candles.

Pattiewack shows you how to make cool candles with ice! How "cool" is that!

On Christmas Eve, Spaniards first colonizing the Southwest lit symbolic fires in front of their homes and on the path to church so that the Christ Child could find His way. Some believed that the Christ Child wandered through the night and blessed all who set a guiding light.

Luminarias (luminaries) can be made quite simply with a #10 paper bag. White bags shine more light. Fold down the bag 2 or 3 folds. Put about a cup of sand in the bag. Place a votive candle into the middle of the sand, pushing it in just enough to steady it.

Outline your driveway and /or walkway by placing them about 3 feet apart. The bags protect the candles from a light wind.

Did you know that during LOTH, we line the campus walkways with around 700 luminaires?

The Smyth Building shares a collection of beautiful crèches (Nativity scene) from around the world. The French word comes from the Italian word greccio. Greccio, Italy was the town where the first manger scene was set up by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223. Some say he did this as an alternative for pilgrims wanting to go to Bethlehem, which the Turks then occupied.

Before that time, many churches had built nativity scenes, but these early mangers were covered with gold, silver, and jewels. Francis thought they were much fancier than the original manger where the Christ child was laid. He wanted to reenact the scene of the first Nativity as a solemn and joyous occasion “lest he should be accused of lightness or novelty.”

Craft time!

Here’s how to make pomander balls, which are simply oranges pierced by cloves. As the fruit dries, it releases a lovely fragrance. Pomanders make beautiful centerpieces, gifts for friends, tree ornaments, and air fresheners.

Take firm oranges and stud them with whole cloves. That’s it!

You can also use a toothpick to make pre-made holes; this is helpful for children because the cloves can hurt their little hands (and ours).

Be creative and arrange the cloves in diamonds, circles, or other patterns. As the orange dries, it will release a delicate, spicy fragrance.

For a stronger aroma, cover the entire orange with cloves, and then roll it in a mixture of spices such as: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg, 1 tablespoon allspice. Leave the orange in the mix for a week, turning once a day.

To hang your pomander, run a long wire through the orange; make a knot at the bottom and a loop at the top for hanging. Or, you can tie red ribbon around your pomander for a festive look!

Our Story

Celebrate Christmas at the annual "Lights on the Hill" festivities. The event is held the second weekend in December, this year Saturday, December 14th, 2019 from 2-8 p.m. Activities happen in historic 19th century buildings beginning at the corner of Route 27 (High Street) and South Road in Candia, NH (exit 3 off Rt. 101). Walk the beautiful village campus lined with hundreds of luminaries or ride the shuttle bus around to each site. Help us support those in need by donating a hat or warm gloves or socks. Toast a marshmallow or just warm your hands at the glowing campfire. Enjoy a light supper in the Café and top it off with a homemade dessert in the Bakery. Children as well as adults will delight in seeing live nativity animals at the “Bethlehem” stable. The Heritage Commission will greet you at the Smyth Building, which is on the National Historic Register. View crèches from all over the world. The Christmas Store is a delightful place to buy those inexpensive stocking stuffers. Elves are available to help your children purchase and wrap gifts for the entire family. Young adults will be drawn to the Coffeehouse to sip a cup of cappuccino while listening to acoustical music selections. Christmas Shows have something for everyone – come enjoy the Concord Coachmen Chorus, the Granite State Cloggers, music from Jesse Re*****on High School and Moore School students and more. Children’s activities across the picturesque village campus include cookie decorating and craft making.
