There’s a side of what we do at CHAIS that rarely gets talked about.

You won’t see photos of it.
You won’t hear many stories about it.
And that’s intentional.

The advocacy side of this organization is built on confidentiality. It’s built on trust. Our handlers are stepping into some of the hardest moments imaginable—standing alongside young victims of trafficking, exploitation, and abuse as they navigate the system and begin to find their footing again.

There’s no spotlight for that work.

But it matters.

A lot.

These handlers show up every time they’re called. No recognition, no expectation—just a willingness to serve. They are, without question, the unsung heroes of this organization.

I want to take a moment to recognize one of those people.

Kim Laasko.

Kim consistently shows up when she’s needed—and more than that, she’s always asking how she can do more. That mindset is rare, and it makes a real difference for our team and for the people we serve.

Alongside her is Bellah, her therapy K9, who brings a calm, steady presence into environments where it’s needed most. What they do together matters more than most people will ever see or understand.

And in true Kim fashion, she never shows up empty-handed—bringing snacks and taking care of the team during SAR trainings in a way that doesn’t go unnoticed.

Kim, I appreciate you.
Your consistency, your humility, and your willingness to serve.

You represent exactly what CHAIS is supposed to be.

If you feel called to support that mission, please consider donating. CHAIS is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and your donation is tax-deductible. In addition to deploying SAR K9 teams, we provide therapy and protection K9s to survivors of human trafficking as they face their abusers in court.
Help us be ready when it matters most.

“Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
“Here am I. Send me.” — Isaiah 6:8

That is the heart of CHAIS. When disaster strikes, the call comes in… and we go.

We are a nonprofit. Every member of this team is a volunteer.
No one is paid to do this work. No victim, no community gets a bill for our work. There is no charge.

Our handlers and support crews carry the burden themselves —
• Food for their K9s
• Veterinary care
• Travel expenses
• Time away from work
• Time away from their families

We purchase our own equipment. We fund our own training. We show up — because the mission demands it.

Answer the call… and help. In any way that we can.

Right now, we are preparing for what could be one of the worst disaster seasons on record. More calls. More deployments. More lives hanging in the balance.

Your donations are what make it possible for our teams to reach ground zero.
Your support is what allows us to train — not just to survive the most difficult environments on earth, but to thrive in them.

To save lives.
To find the missing.
To answer questions.
To give families the foundation of closure.

We need your help.

We are currently raising funds for:
• A SAR-specific drone to support and enhance our K9 operations
• Sending new K9 teams to Texas A&M TEEX – K9 Search Specialist Course

This is how we build capability. This is how we honor the call.

Please donate via the link in our bio.

We need your help.

Search and rescue, locally and internationally, relies on a coordinated consortium of organizations working together to deliver the highest level of service to the communities we serve. At CHAIS, we fully understand and embrace this approach. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our operations and deployments are made possible through donor support and collaboration with partner organizations, allowing us to maintain a high standard of readiness. From dedicated training environments to seamless cross-team integration, our focus remains on continuous improvement and advancing our capabilities for the benefit of communities both at home and abroad.

CHAIS handlers and K9 teams participated in a multi-agency training exercise alongside Oregon Army National Guard Aviation, USCG Air Station Astoria, the USAF 304th Rescue Squadron, Clackamas County Fire & Rescue Swift Water Team, and Clackamas County SAR.

We’re grateful to have been included in such a high-level, collaborative training opportunity and to work alongside agencies dedicated to the same mission.

This joint operation focused on preparing for flood and water-related disaster scenarios, reinforcing CHAIS’ ongoing commitment to readiness and integration within the disaster response side of search and rescue.

Huge thank you to Kelle with Kelle’s K9 Heroes for your incredibly generous donation of two K9 trauma kits to our team here at CHAIS.

As a volunteer based Search & Rescue organization, our K9s are asked to work in unpredictable environments, from dense brush and disaster debris to extreme weather and rugged terrain. Just like their human teammates, they face real risks in the field. Having properly equipped, field ready trauma kits on hand means that if the unthinkable happens during training or deployment, we have the tools we need to stabilize and care for our partners until they can receive veterinary treatment.

These kits will be carried on deployments and training missions, helping us keep our working dogs safer while they do the job they were trained for.

Support like this directly impacts our operational readiness and the welfare of our K9s. We are beyond grateful to have community partners like Kelle’s K9 Heroes standing behind our mission.

If you know of another working K9 team or organization that could benefit from a trauma kit like this, please consider reaching out to Kelle F Burden on Facebook to help connect resources where they’re needed most.

Thank you for helping us protect the dogs who protect and serve our communities.

Night training in a live construction environment and these dogs showed exactly why we trust them in the dark. K9 Storm, K9 Atreus, and K9 Tulip crushed complex HRD hides with buried and elevated sources, working independently and committing without hesitation. K9 Six and K9 Azula ranged hard, problem-solved drifting odor, and finished their finds with confident alerts. K9 Pony tracked through contamination and environmental chaos and stayed in the work the entire time.

Every team met operational expectations. No shortcuts, no easy scenarios, just honest work in unstable debris and tough conditions. We closed with obedience, tightened our safety standards, and walked away more cohesive than we arrived. This is a team I’m endlessly proud of, and dogs I’d deploy without question.

2026 CHAIS SAR/R Academy ✅

Four days of training, teamwork, and pushing past limits.

From classroom foundations to field operations, land navigation, medical, tactics, survival skills, and a full overnight exercise in absolutely miserable weather, this academy demanded both mental focus and physical grit. Grueling PT and fitness requirements set the tone early and reminded everyone that SAR work requires endurance, discipline, and the ability to perform when exhausted.

This wasn’t just about learning skills. It was about learning to rely on each other, communicate under stress, and function as a team when conditions are less than ideal. That’s where trust is built.

We are incredibly proud of every member who attended. Congratulations on completing the academy.

A huge thank you to our experienced handlers and instructors who stepped up to mentor, teach, and support throughout the week. Your knowledge and leadership strengthen this organization every time you show up.

And to our new members, welcome. We’re glad you’re here. This is just the beginning.

CHAIS continues to grow because of people willing to commit to the mission, the training, and to each other.

Advocacy isn’t a side mission at CHAIS, it is the mission.

We exist to give voices to those who can’t speak for themselves and to stand beside the families who deserve truth and dignity.

Volunteer applications are now open. If you feel called to serve, step forward. Apply through the link in our bio or message us with questions. We’re building a team that stands for something bigger than itself.

Congratulations to K9 Lira & Handler Kayla, and K9 Tulip & Handler Jensen 🐾

Today, both teams successfully recertified on their Land Human Remains Detection (HRD) certifications—a milestone that reflects hundreds of hours of disciplined training, continuous evaluation, and real-world operational experience.

From serving their local communities to supporting national and international aid efforts, these teams have deployed where the work is hardest and the outcomes are never guaranteed. HRD work doesn’t always bring closure—but it does provide answers. And those answers can be the difference between uncertainty and understanding, helping families move toward eventual peace and comfort.

At CHAIS, we’re proud of the professionalism, resilience, and quiet commitment these teams bring to every mission. Today’s recertification isn’t just a test passed—it’s a reaffirmation of readiness, integrity, and service.

Well done, teams. We’re honored to serve alongside you.

It’s inspiring to see young people take action when their community needs it most. The SAGE kids are collecting food for struggling families and CHAIS is joining forces with them to make sure their pets are cared for too.
We’re accepting donations of unopened human food and pet food at Huffman K9 Obedience through December 31st.
A little kindness goes a long way. Thank you for helping us support both families and their furry companions.
