We spent today spreading some joy, one bouquet at a time! 💐🌹

For Laker Day, the Horticulture program participated in the Society of American Florists’ Petal-It-Forward initiative to spread happiness through flowers!

The idea is simple: keep one bouquet for yourself, and give another to someone else to brighten their day🌷❤️

Thank you to FLCC Student Life for helping make this event possible!

Earlier this week, our freshman Horticulture students had the opportunity to tour Wafler Nursery in Wolcott! 🍎

During our visit, students got an inside look at the horticultural practices and concepts that go into managing an orchard of Wafler’s scale, as well as the business expertise needed to help an agricultural operation thrive in today’s industry. The experience provided a valuable, hands-on extension of the concepts we explore in our classrooms! 🌱

And, of course, we may have eaten a few too many apples along the way. 😅🍎

At FLCC, we prioritize hands on learning, and our fisheries classes are no exception! Our Fisheries Techniques class went out and sampled Honeoye Lake using our electrofishing boat. Classes like this give our student hands on training that gives them the skills to work as technicians, or to move on to four year schools. Follow along for more in-class photos of our hands-on learning!

Students in our Floral Design course wasted no time jumping into the new semester! 💐

This week, they learned about processing techniques for cut flowers, created their first mound arrangements, and participated in an anonymous critique, giving and receiving feedback on each other’s creations!

Go figure- our alumni love being outside exploring and learning years after FLCC! Trout Lake Pond Puttering- New York State Flora Association field trip at Letchworth State Park on June 12th. Environmental Conservation Professor Maura Sullivan joined field trip leader Kyle Webster (botanist with NY Natural Heritage Program, Horticulture A.A. and Science A.S. 2014) and fellow participants; Joshua Fisher (NY state parks, Natural Resource Conservation A.A. 2005), and Charlie Ippolito (biologist for NY state parks, Environmental Studies A.S. 2019) for a great day of botanizing and wet feet.

End of semester paddle for environmental conservation students on Honeoye Lake! No better way to reflect on a successful semester than relaxing with friends and classmates on the water.

Happy graduation day to our graduates 💙💚 Your futures are so bright and we’re thankful to have been a part of your academic journey at FLCC. Cheers & congratulations!

Our horticulture students wrapped up a full makeover of one of our courtyard flowerbeds this week — after starting the process with a cleanup this past fall! Check out the process and the behind-the-scenes work they put in here! 🪏🪴

This flowerbed will now serve as a living classroom where students can study various plant specimens they learn about in courses such as Woody & Herbaceous Plant Materials!

We’re thinking the students in conservation club may have a future in fashion ahead of them…

Conservation club put their art skills to the test last week! Students (and faculty & staff) joined to tie-dye con club t-shirts and add fish prints.

The end of the semester is near and it was a great day to bond as students and relax from preparing for the end of the semester!

The fish used were caught by fisheries techniques and fish culture students and included walleye, lake trout, yellow perch, bluegill, and rock bass.
