A huge thank you to our small but mighty Marcus Whitman crew that helped CLWA clean-up the rock line at Kershaw Park yesterday. Thank you Jon, Esther, and Elaine, pictured left to right in the pictures.

Jon Pragle, is a high school science teacher at Marcus Whitman who does a lot of awesome science field work with his students including the Trout in the Classroom program which we offer educational programs for. Elaine is one of his students at Whitman and Esther is Jon’s daughter. We love it when the younger generation is already helping with lake stewardship! Thanks again to you all!

Thank you as well to the city of Canandaigua for helping us organize this and taking the trash for us!

What a beautiful fall day to be out enjoying the lake.

Notice that lake foam?
Lake foam can be a natural part of a healthy lake, but researchers are studying what causes it, how it changes, and what it can tell us about lake conditions.

Our amazing volunteers help by reporting where and when they see foam, providing valuable observations for researchers studying this phenomenon.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤
Average water clarity is about the same as last week while average surface water temp continues to get cooler - both about as expected for this time of year. Lake level is down ever so slightly this week compared to last. Despite cool temps and cloudy skies at the beginning of the week, we had 14 harmful algae bloom reports come in this week. With some sunshine back in the forecast we should have some beautiful fall weather coming up next week.

Join the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association and the Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) for a second year of trail work at the Great Hill Nature Preserve in Middlesex NY. The main focus of the day will be side- hilling and working on switchbacks. All gear, including gloves and clippers, will be provided by FLLT.

When: Friday, October 16th, 10:00AM-12:30PM and 1:30-4:00PM.

Where: Great Hill Preserve, 4756 S Hill Rd, Middlesex, NY 14507

*Meet location will be Clark’s Gully parking area because parking is a bit tricky at the preserve. We will then carpool to the preserve.*

Please wear appropriate attire for trail clean-up and bring plenty of water and a snack if you’d like.

*Registration is required so we know how many volunteers to expect! Thank you!*

We had an awesome time with 6th grade classes from Victor, Naples, Marcus Whitman, Honeoye, and Saint Mary’s schools last week at the annual Conservation Field Day’s event Ontario County SWCD and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County fabulously organize and run. We are always thrilled to be part of this wonderful event. Thank you for having us!

Students got to pond dip with us at one station and do a pond simulation at the other. We had so much fun watching the students explore the aquatic macroinvertebrates and vertebrates in these ecosystems! We have two beautiful fall days for the event as well!
